As states across the nation ramp up their efforts to catch illegal immigrants, the Obama administration on Thursday launched a new free hotline for people busted on violations to get help.

The hotline, run by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, is available 24/7 for detained individuals to phone if they think they “may be U.S. citizens or victims of a crime.”

The hotline will have translation services available in several different languages. ICE personnel will gather the caller’s information and send it to a field office for immediate action, according to the press release.

The purpose of the hotline and other measures, including a new detainer form, are “to ensure that individuals being held by state or local law enforcement on immigration detainers are properly notified about their potential removal from the country and are made aware of their rights.”

The new practices are “part of a broader effort to improve our immigration enforcement process and prioritize resources to focus on threats to public safety, repeat immigration law violators, recent border entrants and immigration fugitives while continuing to strengthen oversight of the nation’s immigration detention system and facilitate legal immigration,” ICE wrote in its press release.

ICE is an arm of the Department of Homeland Security.

You'd think there'd be no question in anyone's mind if they are here legally or not.  I don't understand that part of it at least as written in the article.  Either you are legal or not....Duh...

Some illegals are undoubtedly victimized and are afraid to complain to the authorities, fearing repercussions from the ones doing the victimization and the INS deporting them, and an anonymous  hotline theoretically might help there.  Even then, I question if some illegal who is truly being victimized would call anyway.  I sure wouldn't.     I'd think it was some sort of troll thing.
On the basis of what's in the press article it seems kind of  worthless to me, other than maybe just another good example of vote buying tactics by political parties..   Keep the Hispanics happy - the legal ones have a lot of voting power.

Like you would even know who or what a democrat looks like. You've already LIED about that before! Why not help them, the candidates that you support want to keep them here permanently anyway! This would just be working the problem  with a little bipartisanship. Next your party will want spanish as the official language.

Well I think I smell one every once in a while. We have a large chicken shed about 3 miles away and when the wind is blowing out of the south it is hard to tell if a democrat is driving by or it is just the chicken shed.

I find the immigrant situation quite the conundrum. The bulk of the Mexican people are Roman Catholic (Christian) who many of the Republicans try very hard to appeal to. You would think they would go out of hei way to garner their votes. Not sure how this got backwards in that regard.
Teach a man to fish and he will still vote for the guy who gave him a fish.

How it got backwards was lack of enforcement of current laws. It was because Republicans got their cheap labor and wanted to keep them cheap and Democrats got their votes for trying to advance them. Both parties closed their eyes and let this escalate to the point where it has become a necessity, in my opinion, to send them all back, and start over again.

Seems as though there's a difference between political rhetoric and reality!

President Barack Obama says he backs immigration reform, announcing last month an initiative to ease deportation policies, but he has sent home more than 1 million illegal immigrants in 2 1/2 years — on pace to deport more in one term than George W. Bush did in two.

The Obama administration had deported about 1.06 million as of Sept. 12, against 1.57 million in Bush's two full presidential terms.

The cheap labor part is a very important ingredient for big business especially down south.  Remember,.."It takes an abundance of poor people to keep the rich comfortable."

There are several things Obama has out did bush at.  Obama has growed the National Debt to record hights.

But Obana did send home many more Illigal Mexicans than Bush and most of them well armed with guns paid for by US taxpayers, but they went fast and furious.

Mauser-*lol*  I generally let things slip because when one's multitasking typo's do occur but,........" has.out did,".... "has growed".... how about a few double negatives to top it off?  One somewhat misses the attempted point, no matter how convoluted it may be, when you have to fight through the diction. YOu're right , you can't make this stuff up!

it says that they will be notified of their rights, are illigals even supposed to have rights under the constutution other than say no cruel or unusual punishment? more should be done to keep them out, preventing is much less costly than cureing, like if carp got into devils lake, relitivly easy to keep out, impossible to get out.

Leave it to the liar, (Mauser), to immediately change the subject, when he is beat at his own game,,,,,again. You should ask the liar, (Mauser),  why he voluntarily gave his guns up for the Mexicans to take back home.

Obama while in office has caused the National debt to increase to levels never reached before.   Yes Obama has sent back more illigall Mexicans than Bush, with a lot of the illigalls well armed with guns paid for by US tax payers,  Thanks to Obama's failed program of Fast and Furious.

Is that better for you,I know there is just noway for you to defend truethfully the failed Obama Ad. so it is much easyer to make fun of some-one or blamd it on Bush.

Okay, I will ask the liar myself. Are you always gonna change the subject when you are beat at your own game. Take your lies somewhere else. Another example of the reason, for the  "no child left behind act".  The thread is about immigration. Keep up, or get out!

I heard where some illegal immigrant sympathizers don't want them to be "labled" illegal. They would rather they were referred to as unprocessed citizens. The commentator's response was, "That's like calling a shoplifter an un-checked-out customer." I liked his analogy.
