Well after 10 years of wishing, planning, and working out logistics, the stars have aligned and me, my brother, and my dad have the time off work and means to go on an elk hunt. We are looking at unit 37 because of its higher draw odds. Anyone have any info on that area they may be willing to share? Plan is to go mid September on an archery hunt. Plan is to get dad a general elk tag (any elk, he is the only one with preference points). Me and my bro will try to get cow tags. For us, just getting an elk would be one hell of a success so any info would be greatly appreciated.

i have been going to wyoming for the past two years antelope hunting.  i don't know much about elk hunting but i have started applying for preference points and look forward to going probably 4 or 5 years down the road.  however one thing that i would recommend based on my experience from hunting in wy is the use of a gps uploaded with blm maps for gps.  go to huntingGPSmaps.com for info.  i think it made hunting wyoming so much easier because you always know when you are on private or public land.  the maps are color coded and have private, blm, state, forest, and a few other types of land shown.  some of the state land is marked with signs but from what i saw in the unit i was hunting in was that most of it was not.  if i only had a paper map i would have drove by a lot of public land and not really have known if it was public or private.  the maps also have the hunting units for antelope, elk, and mule deer shown as well.  it costs around $100 and trust me, unless you are really good at reading maps, it is the best $100 you will ever spend.

Good luck Meelosh.  Getting out there while they elk are bugling and ejoying the fall is like listening to fantastic music.   Love it!
Take a variety of calls, cow and calf calls, a bugle of some kind though use them all sparingly.
Quiet clothing and a good lightweight binoculars.
Practise shooting standing, kneeling, under downed timber, and every conceivable position you can imagine.   Tree stands if you use them.   And get in the best shape you can - start now.
Now I'm the dreaded word on FBO!  GREEN!  Green with envy, that is....

Alot of times  archery hunting it can be alot harder to arrow a cow than a bull.  Enjoy your trip.  Most of all as bobkat said get into SHAPE.  It's the biggest thing I see left out when it comes to elk hunting.
Dead animals don't need fur anyway!!!!!!!!!!

Cardio started in November, strength straining starts next week. I do understand that getting a cow may be tougher but, the goal is to get dad a shot at a bull. This wont be my last elk hunt and dad's work schedule (railroad) can be tough to accomodate. Plus we don't want to overwhelmed. I don't think we will put down three elk but you never know.

Me and dad got drawn for our general tags. Little bro did not. I better start hitting the gym a little harder yet.
