I was out to the farm for about 4 hours today. The result was 32 woodticks. I hate the little basturds.  Anyone have a good way to keep them off.

Any good bug repellent sprayed on the pants legs and shoes has always done the trick for me.

I have taken about 50 off my dog already and he mostly frequents my backyard with short mown grass. Bought a Hartz tick collar for him a couple of days ago and have only taken about 10 more ticks off him. Anybody know of a product that works besides that oily junk you apply from head to tail?

Don't apply it head to tail.  I trim/shave about 2 sq inchs on the back of the neck and apply Frontline.   It works great, and since I started shaving a little bit of hair out of the way, the oily mess and smell wasnever there.  It was only for a few days anyway.

Old Jake, do not use the tick collars. Lots and lots of dogs have developed problems from them. I am surprised they are even allowed to sell them anymore. Frontline is the way to go. All of the vets I know or have dealt with recommend this or nothing vs a collar!
In my lifetime I have seen fence row to fence row farming and the return of CRP and game to the landscape. Now we face again the prosepect of fence row to fence row again! Sportsman are our own worst enemy in that we fail to look forward and focus to much on the now!

I'll secnd the frontline thing.  You get what you pay for.  frontline costs more than all the others but it is the cheapest because it works.  Depending where you buy it, it ranges from 36 to 50$ for a 3 month supply.  If your dog and piece of mind isn't worth that then you shouldn't have a dog.  don't even be tempted to buy the others.  clipping the hair as was suggested is highly recommended from me too!

Spray your yard with tempo.  It lasts about 2 to three weeks depending on the weather.  Sposed to be safe for dogs and you if you are crawling around in the grass.  You will be pleasantly surprised how well it works.

If we are talking about your backyard, there are of course bug killing sprays that are very effective at killing ticks in the backyard.

Not nearly as reasonable if we are talking about the back 40 though.

Years ago, a friend of mine in GF, (actually a local veterinarian) told me about using Ortho Sevin on my golden retriever after having her absolutely covered with ticks while she was out with me putting up my deer stand.  He suggested starting at the neck behind the ears and rubbing it generously into the fur and working back to the tail.  After this is done, keep your dog busy (playing fetch or something for a while) to prevent them from licking the Ortho Sevin off since it seems to forget about it.  WORKS GREAT!  I had dead ticks covering the kenel floor afterwards.  Now I sprinkle the dog beforehand any time I want to go where there may be ticks.  Haven't found anything that works this well and you can buy it at any garden shop or WalMart, KMart, etc.

I used a product years ago before frontline was available. It was SWAT fly spray for horses and dogs. A local vet turned me on to it. It was the only thing I could put on my chessie that didn't bother him. I tried looking it up on the web and only found the ointment not the spray. The spray never had a strong scent to it and worked great. My dog would come running up when he saw the bottle come out. Works for flies and ticks. I used to apply it weekly. I used to spray a little on my pant legs before fishing and it helped.

There is some flea/tick shampoo that I get at walmart. I wash the dog with this about once a month. Between washings I use some spray they sell that is organic and has clove oil and stuff in it. It seems to work, also makes the coat shiny and smells ok too. The spray is in a green/white bottle if I remember correctly.

Buy some permonone! It comes in a spray can! It lasts for weeks! Spray your clothing with it in advance, I usually do it in the garage the night before! Spray your pants, shirt, socks, cap etc.... Used it turkey hunting this weekend and not one tick!!!!! My buddy was pulling ticks off himself all weekend!! It's pretty potent stuff, so it can't be used on the skin! You also don't smell like bug spray when you get home! It pretty much takes a full can to do an outfit, but if your going to be in the woods for any amount of time it is highly worth it. I believe a can runs $5-$8. I think even walmart carries it!!!!!

I hate ticks, tests here in the north country showed "deet" had little effects on these critters, but they had a solution to bug spray and I think it is what 'tearbear" is talking about,to lazy to check it out...Otherwise just share some frontline with your pooch,a little dab on the back of your neck and your good to go  (let us know if it works)

I would go with the permenone.  The active ingredient is permethrin, which is what our troopers over in the sandbox use on their uniforms to keep the disease carrying insects off.  I have sprayed thousands of uniforms as the Entomologist and Prev Med Officer and use it on all my battle dress uniforms when over there or at home.  I highly recommend it.   Always read and follow the label directions.  Do not wear the treated clothing until it is dry and treat in a well ventilated area.  It can and has caused some skin irritation to those that did not heed my, as well as the label warnings.  I would not recommend applying it indoors as the mist will not dissapate in the enclosed space.  It works on all 6 or 8 legged pests.  It doesn't work for months and months, but it is the best we can provide for the guys fighting over there.   Which is good enough for me.  I forgot to mention that it is also not a great idea to sleep in any treated clothing.   That is not on the label and is something we found out the hard way over there.  However, for you deer hunters out there, it does have an aroma so use in the early deer seasons at your own descretion.  For the dogs, Frontline is about the best you can get for a systemic anti parasitic treatment.  My next suggestion would be some form of ivermectin.  Hope this helps.
