Does anyone know of a way to get a whopper club patch without killing the fish? I would rather let the big ones go, but apparently you have to have it weighed on a trade scale. I know there is a catch and release club, but it has less eligible species and you don't get the patches. Anyone know of a way?

Yeah, you apply for a Catch and Release patch instead. That's why they have two programs. One to give those who catch a big fish and keep it credit, and one for those who release them credit.

Whopper club has a minimum weight requirement that must be from a scale used for commercial purposes, hence subject to calibration.

How would you propose to weigh a fish at a commercially used scale and then release it under the "release immediately" provisions of ND fishing regs?

Whopper club catch and release goes by fish length. My son got a patch and certificate for releasing a 27 1/2" walleye.

Allen, That was basically my question. I realize the fish will have to die to get it weighed. I was wondering if there was any alternative. A bait shop guy told me Game and Fish was o.k. with measuring its length and circumfurence for "whopper club" and sending it in that way (I didn't believe him). Catch and release club sounds cool, but I wanted to work towards the Master Whopper patch ;)

lowelldogger,

Sounds like a good question to ask the NDGF if they do this. Seems to me this may have been brought up for discussion several years ago, but I don't know if it ever got implemented. I'd surf on over to their website and submit the question.

I've always had good luck getting answers back from them. Especially from their fisheries staff.

I believe its like first you get a whopper patch, second whopper, (different species) expert patch, and a third whopper (different species) a master angler patch.

WHOPPER CLUB REQUIREMENTS
Only species listed and meeting minimum weight requirements will qualify for patch and certificate.

All fish entered must have been harvested by legal methods as described in the North Dakota fishing guide and come from North Dakota waters . Entries must be weighed on scale used in trade.

An application card must be filled out, giving weight and length of fish, date and where caught, tackle and bait used (if applicable), signature of applicant, and signature of person weighing the fish. Only one application may be made for each species in a lifetime. You receive a patch for the first whopper of a species, and Expert patch for a whopper of another species, and a Master patch for a whopper of the third species. After that only certificates will be awarded for whoppers of additional species.

STATE RECORD REQUIREMENTS
1. All new state record fish must be weighed on a scale used commercially and subject to certification by the Weights and Measures Division, North Dakota Public Service Commission.
2. The catch must be verified by an employee of the North Dakota Game and Fish Department.
3. A recognizable photo must be furnished to the department.

CATCH AND RELEASE CLUB REQUIREMENTS
Eighteen species of fish qualify for Catch and Release Club. Entries must meet minimum length requirements and be released unharmed back to the water. Another fisherman must witness and verifythe measurement and release.

The angler will receive an official membership certificate and a choice of jacket patch or boat decal. A "FIVE" patch or decal will be awarded for each additional five entries.

I fish for fun, not patches.

A patch doesn't mean anything, or make you a better person.

My opinion only.....

I think we all fish for fun, but getting a patch is a neat idea and I'ts fun to to have goals to work towards, especially when your freezer is full of meat and you don't really need to keep anything more.

You have to have so many "whopper patches" to get the master angler award. Not sure exactly how many you have to have but a buddy of mines grandpa is the only guy I know of who has one.
