Wholesale Sports Outdoor Outfitters is closing its Fargo store, saying its performance failed to meet expectations.

FARGO – Wholesale Sports Outdoor Outfitters is closing its Fargo store, saying its performance failed to meet expectations.

All 38 store employees have been asked to stay on until the inventory is sold and the store closes its doors in about 12 weeks, according to today’s news release announcing the closure.

“Closing a store is always a very difficult decision,” Glenn Bingley, chief operating officer, said in the release. “We have had a really dedicated team working in Fargo but despite their best efforts, we have not been able to establish a strong base in this area. We have considered all our options, but at the end of the day, it’s just not a viable market for us.”

Wholesale Sports acquired the Fargo store and 14 locations in the Pacific Northwest when Sportsman’s Warehouse filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2009.

The Fargo store, located at 4901 13th Ave. S., is the easternmost U.S. location in Wholesale Sports’ network of 26 stores, located primarily in the Pacific Northwest and Canada.

“This location was somewhat of an anomaly for us. It did not fit our footprint or infrastructure nor did it perform to our expectations,” Bingley said.

All other Wholesale Sports locations in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Wash-ington and Canada will remain open.

According to Bingley, a store closing sale will begin today and continue until all merchandise is sold. All store fixtures, including apparel racks, shelving and lighting, will also be sold.

Wholesale Sports will honor gift cards throughout the sale. The store will accept returns for all items purchased before today in accordance with the company’s return policy, but all sales after today at the Fargo location will be final.

Wholesale Sports is a subsidiary of Calgary, Alberta-based UFA Co-operative Limited, a member-owned agricultural cooperative.

Good thing I am moving to a town that has a Cabela's because I hate shopping at Scheels for outdoor equipment I really liked this store.

Not suprised.  Everytime I went in there it was like a ghost town.

I'm not surprised either.  There always seemed to be like 4 or 5 cars in the lot whenever I shopped there - and those were probably the employees' cars...

For what its worth, Gander doesn't seem to do much better from what I've seen.

Running a store from the "home office" with no discression for the local staff to adjust inventory for their locale puts you at a distinct disadvantage in a sporting goods store.  Not trading in used guns means the most avid gun buyers don't stop in very often, which means your reloading, gun cleaning, accessories and optics dept's miss out on that traffic as well.

I tried to give them as much as my business as possible.  I asked if they could order three different guns for me and they said nope they don't do that.  I asked them to match the price on a couple guns and scopes.... and they said nope...... I love the store and will miss it.  I have to run in and buy up a bunch of my shells I shoot.  They are the only ones that carry them.

I stopped in there today and there were no out of the ordinary sales or signs up. I did notice two guys starting to put things up though. 20% off all footware. I would expect the bg discounts until the end.

Interesting, I bought a rifle there a few month ago.  They price-matched it with one at Scheels that was on sale.  It was only about $50-$60 savings, but hey, that's a couple boxes of shells...

The biggest reason why I hate Scheels! You can't get in the store without salesmen bombarding you with Can I Help You? What are you looking at? Are you finding what you need? How about give me a minute to find what I need, and then come and ask me for help. Ironically I think they push hard to "help" people, but it drives away my business because I always feel like I am being pestered. Also every once in awhile, I enjoy walking around the store and just looking at things, which makes the can I help you problem worse because pretty soon everyone in the store has talked to you.

Brady, i agree hate being asked over and over. but when you need help its a b*tch when there isnt anyone around, and when you find someone they havent any clue

Sales people cant sell anything if they dont ask you what you want.   Just get to know a salesman and tell people that he is who you work with.

I don't seem to have a problem getting pestered by salespeople.  If asked, I usually respond politely that I'm just looking around and tell them I'll certainly ask for help if I need it.

I've found that making eye contact with a salesperson tends to trigger them to ask.  I think the good ones pick up on a customer avoiding eye contact and recognize that as a desire to be left alone.
