Who's pumped for MN Musky opener

Can't wait until this Saturday for opener!  Boy it is a long wait with all the other species opening before musky.  I suppose it gives me a few weeks to fish for something else, because once June 5th rolls around I won't be fishing for much other than musky until ice up.

We had a good last outing in the fall of 2009, catching a fish on Black Friday the day after Thanksgiving.  I think a day or two later is was below zero, so we were probably one of the last ones to catch a musky on this lake.  Hopefully we can be one of the first this year!

Good luck to all.

NICE fish. It makes me depressed though, since I've never caught one. I had a friend who got me hooked on Ski's, but haven't fished for them since he moved.

I wasn't planning on making it for opener this year, on account of it's me and Mrs. Jig-em-up's anniversary, but I do plan to get out ASAP.

This guy right here is jacked, pumped, loaded and ready, giddy, etc.  Nice fish too!  I'm ready to lay the hammer down myself. Hopefully will make it out this weekend, if not, this summer more Muskies are  on my hitlist!!

I'm planning my first trip out to LOW the end of July to get some muskies.  Any hints on what to use?  Would like to add one to my fish on the wall collection.

Hey Josh~You'll have plenty of time, actually the best time to get after active monster's starts in mid july as a rule, however some of the biggest fish are caught in the fall, largest I've seen was caught in october on mille laces 55"er +,big ole monster, the guy that caught it from McQuoids resort did a measurement, then a CPR and back in she went, very well could've been a new state record, well over 50lbs they figured but did'nt have a scale.

Musky guru's claim they really put the feed bag on in the fall,1-2lbs daily.

This spring we caught a couple walleyes in the 19" to 22" range that were really shreaded, had another one grab a 19" walleye just under the boat, then it released the fish as it came up to the surface, the jaw marks from side to side were 1" from the gill plate to the narrow part of the tail, only seen a giant shadow of the fish, not the whole thing.

BTW~ Dang nice pic there maniac~

Musky fishing is frustrating stuff, but every once in a while you have one of them days that keeps you coming back for more. This was one of those days, last august on lake vermillion. I can't wait.

Just curious, but why does MN have all of these different openers? I mean walleye, bass, muskie, what the heck, is it just for the resorts or is there a biological reason behind it? Do they spawn later then pike and walleye?

Hunt'n~

Yup,all the opener's are relative to spawn~Muskies spawn about 3 weeks later than pike and walleyes and the fry are snapped up by the young of the year walleye and pike, hence a 1 fish daily limit.

The state of minnesota also makes a killing, especially on the walleye opener. everyone is buying gas to go to lake, fishing stuff, beer etc. plus the resorts make a killing and they have to pay taxes to the state too. personally i think that is a big reason. but as said above i think the spawn started it.

1 fish over 48" is the reg. There are not many in even the best of muskie lakes so even one has its impact.

I love to fish for northerns, so I suspect I could get
into muskie fishing pretty easy.  Looks like it's a
blast and from what I've heard, once you've got
the "fever", you don't get over it.  Had a good Vet
buddy who lived 40 miles south of LOW, but he
passed away couple years ago from Agent Orange.
I know him and his Dad did alot of muskie fishing
because I saw his pictures.  I was always invited and
I always put it on my "to do" list, but I never got it done.
Looks like I messed up pretty good on this one.

siouxeet~

You'd be surprised at how healthy the musky population is these days here, the dang DNR have stocked so many lakes that some folks are concerned that they've wrecked certain fish populations, mostly walleyes on smaller bodies of water.Tatics have changed alot in the past few years and multilpal hookups can be had in one day done right, the follows are almost as much fun as a hookup, these fish have no fear, they'll come up and sniff, look ya right in the eye and slide off if they don't take, nice and slow too.

They're still a top line predator, and as such, their population density is the lowest in the lake.  It doesn't take too many people keeping fish to have a great impact.  The DNR in Minnesota has done an excellent job with the muskies, but the reason the state fishery is so good is because of catch-and-release.  It takes probably 20 years to grow a 50" fish.  There is a good portion of the musky community that would (and have) release state record fish.  The 48" minimum is a great start but I would like to see it at 50" at least.

Also, it has been proven time and again that musky do not have negative impacts on walleye populations in MN despite what some people may believe (and you will never change their mind).

http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fish/muskellunge/muskiefaq.html

The amount of musky waters in the state is also inadequate for the popularity growth of the sport the past several years.  That is why the DNR is looking to introduce 5 more lakes in the state, which I'm sure is not going to be an easy task because of the amount of misinformation regarding the fish.  There's around 80 some lakes with muskies in MN and somewhere around 1800 with walleye, I believe.
