What makes me sick????

When I see people keeping small perch !

After reading many reports I can see that most people are keeping 8"-10" perch on Lake Darling and other lakes. Why keep such a small perch when you barely get any fillet off of it? Catch and release fishing would be a good practice for these perch. Most of these small perch may even be females that reproduce to feed the starving northerns. Once the perch are fished out then the walleyes will be soon to follow.

If your that desparate to eat fish why dont you keep all the pike and actually do a favor for the lake. Thanks to those people Lake Darling will again be a dead sea with a few northerns!!!! Please do not ruin the lake for everyone.

I think a size restriction or a smaller limit of 10 would help curb this problem.

Groups of people are keeping huge numbers of perch. 40 50 60 70 80 perch and thats the problem. If you are keeping 10 perch then keeping a few small ones would not be as bad

Many of these are small perch. Just makes no sense to me.

Keep whatever size you want, and up to your limit. Sure, one person with a few limits in your freezer is overboard.  It happens.  Just and FYI, there is a reason that certain information is given in fishing regulations such as this....

"Anglers can maintain the quality of angling by practicing selective harvest. Selective harvest encourages the release of medium to large size fish while allowing the harvest of more abundant smaller fish for table fare. Releasing the medium to large fish will ensure that the lake has enough spawning age fish on an annual basis and will provide anglers with more opportunities to catch large fish in the future."

If the fish is cleaned, eaten and enjoyed, where is the problem here.  There is a limit for a reason.  I never have a problem with small fish being taken if they are eaten, but I have a HUGE problem with the dumb a$$ people who leave fish on the ice, particularly northerns, just because they dont know how to clean them or dont like catching them.  I love catching northerns and so do most of our young fishermen.  If you dont, throw them back for another angler to enjoy at a later date.  And to quell the coming arguement, I have surrendered more tackle to rocks and trees than the teeth of a nice scrappy pike.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and

degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is

worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing

to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a

miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so

by the exertions of better men than himself.

Agreed, I clean 8-10 inchers all the time.

If you want bigger perch, taking the small ones out will help.  Have you ever fished a lake overrun with dinky 5 inch perch?  This has been studied and is a result of overpopulation of a species.  In turn, you experience stunted growth.

Without a doubt, coming out into nature is one of the neatest things there is to do, but you also have to be careful. That’s why I always try to pack the heat — try to pack a gun. Just a little bit — pack some heat. Now this isn’t too — this isn’t much of a big boy, I don’t want to kill the animal, but I do want to warn it, and say “hey, I think you’re pretty neat, but I respect your distance.” There’s bears out here, there’s mountain cougars, and biting goats.

Yes that is right on the lakes you fish on the eastside of the the state. It is a little different situation on Lake Darling.

Well because its ridiculous. If they lake gets fished out again then thats my reason.

What would people think if my buddies kept a limit of ten inch walleyes everyday we went out? Why would LOW have size restrictions?

The worst thing to watch is someone take a hoard of perch and then see them poured into a dumpster.  If they follow the law and clean and eat their catch, power to 'em.

Wow, this one is going to get ugly and bloodly like usual. Normally dont see a thread like this till ice off and the spawn starts. LOL

Fear-no-fish,

I am not going to beat you up. I agree with some of what you are saying from a self imposed ethical stand point BUT the facts are the facts and if the law allows it, then "they" are allowed to keep whatever they want up to the legal limits of the law. The only thing we can rest on and help in our own way to protect our resources are our own personnel values and teaching those we teach to fish those similar values.

Trust me I feel your pain from a couple different sides of the coin, mainly Channel A at Devils Lake in the spring when you see stringers of huge fish going out day after day but we can save that conversation for spring. LOL

Those aren't chicks....

People who don't use their blinkers (especially during the winter),  and having to work on great fishing days during the winter makes me sick.

I think this is a legitimate topic.  Discuss it folks instead of getting negative.

Want my take?  Well, personally I have no desire in an 8 inch perch.  10 inch perch seem to be right on the bubble for me too.  Then again, I am not much of a pan fisherman so the whole concept isn't all the exciting.  Although, I think I would get tickled pink if I got into some 11 plus inch perch.  Only way that happens if if 8 and 10 inchers get a chance.

BUT....

It is legal and I say that is all we need to abide by.  If I kept some elevens or tens and wanted a couple more just to make the zip lock bag a little more full maybe I'd toss in an 8 incher.  I think it is situational.  It is up to us to use good judgment.  Judgment like bullheadmaster's quoted statement above.

So as long as it is legal then it's right to do it??? I really hope people are not throwing them away, but  they are throwing most of the fish away after getting a tiny fillet

This would never happen at lake darling. There are many predators in the lake. Most of the big perch have already been fished out. These small ones are all that is left and need to take the place of the big ones.

I hope not to beat up on others, but rather to suggest my point of view. I feel for you on the Channel A situation also. I would not say personal values are to blame in every case, Its just the mindset of some people. They do not realize the harm of fishing the lake out.

I remember when Larimore Dam had many crappie. We caught many nice ones until it was fished out. Now there are still a few left but not many. A smaller limit and a size restriction would alway make sure there are fish to be caught and the population would be maintained.

It would stop winter and summer kills? Low reproduction due to water levels and temps? Be careful using ALWAYS when stating your prefered method of handling a situation.

It's not that bad.
