If you were to plant a food plot of any kind, what will deer walk past any other food source for? You see all the shows that talk food plots, but what have you found to be the best for ND deer?

Ive always heard that you want a mix that will stay green longer. Something that goes into the winter when there is nothing else around, that should keep deer in the area. Cant remember what it is but there is something that when it freezes it pushes all its surgar from the roots into its leaves, deer cant resist.

I am looking for crops to plant that the deer prefer over any other. Just thinking ahead because the baiting deal will not last much longer. The commies will work every angle until they scare the voters into getting it stopped. Not wanting to start a baiting war on here by any means, but I bet that not one anti baiting hunter has a problem with shooting a deer on a stroll to a cut corn field that has a little spillage. I am just planning ahead.

In the warm season any high protein Legume such as Alfalfa,Field Peas, Lentils etc are all good. In the cold season anything high in energy like Corn,Sunflowers, etc. Don't know of a single magic number.......My 2 favorites would be Alfalfa and Corn.

corn, sunflowers, soybeans, and peas are a good source, actually are hard to beat , around here anyway

keep an eye on the barley, oats, canola fields, if there is any regrowth a few weeks after harvest

the deer love it.

If I had to put in a plot and I had the ability to replant yearly I"d probably put in a few acres of field peas.. around here that is a huge source of protein for the deer. If I had the chance to do perennial plots I'd probably be looking towards some type of clover or alfalfa. I'd probably use a belly mower to mow it down to stimulate spreading and regrowth. Some of those clovers I believe are close to 12 percent protein. Around my plots I'd be planting APPLE TREES..... lots of them..... once those were established and producing you'd have a smorgasbord of food for your deer herd. Ring the dinner bell!!!!

48suks,
If you don't want to start a baiting war on here stop calling people who disagree with you commies.

Deer are not grazing animals like buffalo or cattle. They are considered a "browser" species. That is why many die in the winter even when they have all the farmer's bales to eat off of. They need different things througout the season to maintain good health.

Here is a good analogy. Imagine you come to the dinner table tonight and when you sat down at the table there was no plate there. Just 30 spoons with 30 different items on it. That is how a deer eats. They browse eating as they come to the field and eating as they leave the field.

I well managed piece of property for deer would include a diverse option of grasses, sedges, bushes, trees, and crops with also a mixture of cool and warm season plants.

StevePike - Not a personal attack on you by any means. A commie is someone who does not allow for freedom of choice and institutes laws based on beliefs. I agree that it should be a choice but see how some on this site attack others who make that decision. I am merely looking for an alternative to baiting. Food plots are also baiting but the hunting industry has put a fancy name on it called Whitetail Management or farming for deer.
