What bow should I buy???

I am looking to upgrade from a PSE Nova that has been a good starter bow for me the last few years.  I have killed 3 deer with it, but all have been withtin 20 yds.  I had a couple opportunities this season at 35 yds and had deer duck the arrow.  I feel it is because the bow is too loud and slow at that range.  When shooting at targets, I am pretty consistent up to 40 yds with it.  I would appreciate any feedback anyone has on new, higher end models out there...thanks for your help!

PS...I am planning on using a cabelas gift card and my points to help me get it, so it would be ideal if it is a model they carry!

Go to a dealer that sells Mathews or Mission bows. Mathews are the high end in price but you can't go wrong. It would last you for years and give you speed, smooth shooting and accuracy out to the longer yardages you are seeking. If you want a similar quality bow at less cost, look at the Mission bows (also made by Mathews) This is also a great bow but does not have all the innovative features.
Use your Cabelas gift card to buy the accessories (Sight, rest, etc)

The new Mathews Z7 or Reezen are fast, quiet and smooth. Their DXT is a great bow and the Mission bows to look at are the Voyager or Eliminator.

Lots of choices, you do need to decide what feels good to shoot. Make sure you test drive some of these before you buy one.

Depending on which cabelas youre going to be purchasing at, they dont all have the same brand line up of bows. However i am pretty sure that most cabelas sell Diamon, which are bowtechs with single cams. Check out the Diamond Iceman its a pretty nice bow thats almost garunteed cabelas will have in stock. and yes Bowtech/Diamond are top notch right with mathews. The black ice is also sweet. however everybody on here thats purchased a few bows in their time will give this last bit of advice......if dont absolutely need to buy from cabelas i would shop around, shoot the top 10 bows from all the companies and make your decision from that. Id hate to miss out on a bow i would have loved to own only to save $30 in cabelas points.

Go out and shoot as many as you can.  Nine times out of ten the bow is going to pick you.  You'll know which one feels the best in your hands, shoots the best and is going to be the best pick.

Don't get caught up in having to have a top end bow from one of the three or four major companies (hoyt, mathews, pse, bowtech)  They are A LOT of money to buy and accessorize and not always something you want to be dragging up a tree!

However, if you decide on a high end bow, you can't go wrong with any of the bows from those companies.  They are all a far cry from what you are shooting now in terms of speed, noise, felt vibration, draw cycle and forgiveness. You'll feel like you could shoot to 100 yards with them.

Some bows, both high and mid line, that I would take a look at......

High End.
Hoyt
Alpha Max 35, 32
Maxxis 31, 35
Alphaburner

Mathews
Z7
Monster 7

PSE
X Force GX
Axe 7

Bowtech
Destroyer
Air Raid
Admiral

Midline-price range

Mission
Voyager
Eliminator

Diamond
Iceamn

Hoyt
Turbowhawk-----This one really sparks my interest....basically the same as a Alphamax but with forged instead of machined riser.

Like I said, go out and shoot a bunch and see what fits. Cabelas has a great selection of mid to high end bows, but I have yet to run into a guy at a Cabelas that really knows his stuff on setting up, tuning and other little nuances of bows. Scheels would be a good place, Grand Forks, Fargo and Bismark I know for sure all have good knowledgeable archery guys.

Good luck!

Do not let the brand name on the bow make your decision to buy it or not.

99% of bow companies today put out great quality bows.

My advice is to ignore the brand and shoot as many as possible and buy the one that feels the best to you.

Who cares what so and so thinks is the best bow, all that matters is if it is best for you.

Good luck!!!

Bingo,
The name of the bow is just a money maker.  I would look at the specs, and see what you want in a bow. The only thing I would make sure of is getting a bow that has an IBO of 300 or more, and an axle to axle length less then 35. After that, its all about how it feels to you. Find one with a comfortable handle, and one that looks good to you. Dont get caught into the brand name buying. Shoot a bunch of them and pick the one that feels the best.

Don't get caught up in the brand hype, you may end up paying a premium price for a name and receiving far from premium performance.  My son had an incident last year with his very old and not so well maintained Hoyt Razortech.  He had a cable fray and break two days before opening day.  I called the Hoyt factory on a Thursday morning and requested that they air flight a set of cables my way so we could assemble on Friday.  They had no problems doing this for me and everything worked out great.  We were on the mountain Saturday morning as planned.  With that kind of service and response time they now have a customer for life.

If you're sure of your stats (drawlength, weight, etc) don't be afraid to shop for slightly used bows as well. Lots of great deals online. Seems like a lot of bow crazy guys buy and try and move onto the next one with little wear on their used one. I don't think I'll ever buy a bow straight out of a store again.
The kill is the satisfying, indeed essential, conclusion to a successful hunt. But, I take no pleasure in the act itself. One does not hunt in order to kill, but kills in order to have hunted. Then why do I hunt? I hunt for the same reason my well-fed cat hunts...because I must, because it is in the blood, because I am the decendent of a thousand generations of hunters. I hunt because I am a hunter.- Finn Aagard

I shoot a PSE Nova @62 lbs with Radial weave shafts. The total arrow and tip is 335 grains and at 12 feet over a cronograph it travels at 296-301 fps. I have never checked it at 40 yds.  I don't think the PSE makes anymore noise than any other bow.  All bows need some kind of supressors.

Fox Island made a great point, alot of guys upgrade every season to the latest and greatest.  My latest bow is a Hoyt V-Tec, I purchased it off e-Bay with a dozen arrows, a quiver, and a half dozen spitfire broadheads for $300.00.  I've had great success with it. I've hunted with it four five seasons and hope I can enjoy it for several more seasons.  You don't have to pay $1,200 or $1,300 to get started.

I am a deer hunter, one thing about deer is they have very good vision, one thing about me is i am better at hiding then they are at vision.

Thats what I do. Can get 2 bows for less than a new one cost. I have bought a couple on the classifieds ar Archery Talk. I would rather have a used high end bow than a new low end bow. Big difference I think.

I am with Fox Island. Look into the slightly used ones on places like archerytalk.com or 3Dshoots.com. I have a Pearson Z-34 that has been handed down twice. Great bow for a great buy. I have yet to make a kill on it but I really enjoy shooting it. Definitely need to find one that you like and not what others like.

maybe you can just quiet the bow you have? If you are already shooting a reasonably quick compound, going to a faster bow isn't going to change the deer ducking issue...they can always out reflex arrow speed if they see and/or hear you shooting. I've killed many a deer from 20 to 55 yards with a "slow" recurve...and have still had them duck/flinch with my new compound. Speed isn't everything...being wary, using stealth and using good judgement is.

I only have two suggestions:

1.  Shoot as many bows out on the market as you can

2.  Buy a MATTHEWS!!!

Haha!!!!   Catch Us if You Can!!

"When we step into the outdoors, we have the privilege of standing in the presence of God through the power and majesty of His creation. That makes hunting more than a sport or a hobby. It's a calling to something greater. And that transforms the places that we stand into something more than a cropfield or a pasture or a mountain. It makes that place Hallowed Ground."
