What Age for BB Gun?

I had this thought based on a response in another thread, and at what age is it appropriate to get a kid a BB gun? Just curious.

A kid can be shooting a bb gun under supervision/with help from an adult as early as you want. They can start at 3 if you want them to in my opinion.

I think with adult supervision they should at least be in kindergarten. They can be dangerous so the kid must have some understanding of responsibility or at least be able to listen well. Heck how old was Ralphie? And look what he did!

I don't think there is a magical age or perfect number. I think it depends on the maturity of the kid and whether or not they understand how to use it safely and that it can be dangerous. Part of the reason I bought the Red Ryder specifically, is because I love "A Christmas Story". My wife thought it was a stupid present for his first Christmas with only being a month old. His birthday is the end of November and he just turned two. But, it was only 25 bucks, and he will need one sooner or later, so I got him a Red Ryder. So, yeah, until he is old enough to use it safely and not shoot his eye out, or anyone else's for that matter, it will sit in the box, in his room, unused. And No, he doesn't know what it is nor that it is in there.

Both of my godsons got BB guns the first time I saw them. One at about 6 weeks, one at 6 months. This is mostly to set the tone for their parents so they know what kind of birthday and chrismas presents the kids can expect from me. My oldest godson got a winchester youth 1300 for christmast when he was 7, I cut the youth stock off another 2" so it fit him. Although he doesn't use it regularly, and never without supervision it does keep him very interrested in hunting/shooting (he bugs his dad about shooting/hunting a lot!), and isn't that the point?

This moment is a paradox, it's the oldest you've ever been as well as the youngest you'll ever be.

My 2 yr. old daughter just received her first gun. It's a Ruger M77 MKII Compact in 7mm-08. Of course she can't use it yet, but she know's it's hers and that it needs to be left with dads guns unless given to her.

The cute thing about it is when you ask her what she does with it she responds "shoot deer" or "shoot big buck".

Definitely no magic age. The problem with giving it to them too early is that kids are curious, and by teaching them it's dangerous it gives it a bit of magic & mystery. So, kids are naturally going to try and play with it when you're not around, not looking. A friend of mine got hit with a ricochet in the eye in grade school. Another friend missed shooting my eye out by about 1/4". Instead, he hit the bone just to the side of my eye along my nose. We had to have been at least 8. guess my point is that if you only allow them to use it supervised at too young of an age, they're going to want to play with it unsupervised and may not fully know the potential of the gun or how to use it properly. BB guns can and have killed humans.

Hello that's why they make gun cabinets and locks. My kids each were shooting their bb guns by 5 and my son is very proficent at 7 with his single shot Cricket with a peep sight. Teach them right and you won't have to worry later.

adult supervision is the key here- my kids were shooting BB guns when they were 4, got their cricket and chipmunks when they were 6 and 7, now at 10 and 11 they are shooting paper plates at 100 yards with their mothers .243. Because they have been around guns a lot and they know there is no latitude for screwing around when they have the guns out, I feel very comfortable letting them go alone with their BB guns. That wouldn't be the case if they hadn't had the guns until they were 8 or 9. TW

I say kindergarten is a good age, there is some maturity at that age and the ability to learn to not point it at anything you don't intend to shoot. My son is going to get one for christmas and he is 6, he will go with out bb's for a year or so until I am sure he understands the business end of the barrel. Then we will start practicing.

Great thread,IMO i think that BB guns are the best thing to start your kid's on,at whatever age.My dad started me on them around 10.I was a city boy so he would only let me shoot at birds that were on the ground-right-and no robins-Shot alot of blackbirds and pine cone's out of the tree's and i almost took my eye out a few times.Plus we would play War and shoot at each other but only aim for the feet.Used that bb gun and learned alot from it.Then dad moved me up to a single shot Springfield .22 and the rest is history!

I hate BB guns!! Like Mike said, the trouble with them is that they don't generate the respect by either the kids or most parents, that a real gun does. Over the years I've seen a lot of kids lose an eye or damage their corneas from "unloaded" bb guns. Anyone ever seen a kid lose an eye from a .22? I haven't - its always those darned bb guns. Thinking about it right now, I can't recall a kid losing an eye from anything else, either! How many times have you heard the expression "its only a bb gun!" - or more tragically after a serious eye injury "it WAS only a bb gun!"
When my kids were small they all started supervised shooting with a shortened stock single shot .22 at around age 5 or so. Wouldn't have a bb gun in the house, although I now do for shooting house sparrows and starlings on our bird feeders. BUT it goes in the gun vault when the grand children come to visit! They always want to shoot so we go out and shoot - but with the same single shot .22 their parents learned with. Not a blankety blank unsafe dangerous bb gun! My opinion - they should all be bulldozed into a huge pile, soaked with diesel fuel and burned!

Ha, the "don't shoot the robins" speech. Got a lecture and a whoopin or two for shooting robins with my bb gun. They were just so tempting at that age b/c they just sat there! My grandpa would really get after me if he saw me shoot one.

I learned how to shoot and be safe by my Dad. He treated the Red Rider like a killer. He taught me every gun is dangerous.

That's the way it goes, some people have good experiences and some bad.In my case the BB gun taught me how to be aware of were the bb was going and made me a safer hunter when they put that high-powered rifle in my hands.Didn't have hunter saftey back then and while hunter saftey is a Very GOOD Program,Have seen many people take it and still don't know how to handle or shot safely-if only they had a BB gun when they were younger..

Lots of good comments. I can't honestly remember when we got ours, the little daisy lever actions. Very little power, but killed many a barn swallow. My brother and I kept grandpa's cats full all winter. I honestly think it honed my hunting skills. We stalked many a bird, and it was a bonus to get a "big" one like a mourning dove. Just can't remember how old we were, but safety was first, and that was, IMHO, a valuable lesson.
