Weather forecast...

The outlook for this weekend and beyond is unreal. Close to or in the upper 30's and lower 40's with next to no moisture throughout the forseable future...and I'm not complaining.

Bismarck has 3 inches of snowfall for the season and doesn't look like we'll change that for the rest of 2011. That has got to be near a record for low snowfall total through December 31st of any snow season. Talk about a drastic change from the last 3 winters.

Gonna have to start questioning water releases if we continue this trend.  Up to 24,000 and we sit at 1839 now.  Not worried yet...but we are always one year away from a drought.

Tim you won me a case of beer of my choice for your last post! I bet a friend that someone on the site would be talking about concerns of water levels in the big lake before mid Jan regarding letting out to much! Thanks for the early Christmas Present!
In my lifetime I have seen fence row to fence row farming and the return of CRP and game to the landscape. Now we face again the prosepect of fence row to fence row again! Sportsman are our own worst enemy in that we fail to look forward and focus to much on the now!

A lack of precipitation for at least the past 60 days contributed to the expansion of moderate drought conditions across North Dakota and Minnesota. According to the preliminary data, Fargo, ND has experienced the second driest September - December period.

Go back to my posts in september --- thats when the gates should of been closed.  Drought monitor was creeping up at that time and now its covered the whole state.  My q to the guys that tiled --- its my understanding if you have water source you can pump back into those tiles --- if you cant though --- does the tile have a big downside drying out your field to much?
Stay thirsty my friends

Hard,

Hope it is a present worth a darn.

Always one year away from a drought and we seen what rushing water through the system can do. Unlike the event we went through last year we have well documented data on droughts. Severe even. I am not even near panic level but I am hoping the Corp says what they said they'd do of which was to not change because governors and residents along the Missouri want changes because we had a rain season of epic nature.

Good example of how the corps is in a catch-22.  Don't release much and get blasted for flooding caused by epic precipitation or release a bunch and get blasted for not leaving us enough water.

Merry Christmas!

Thank you.

after going back to sakakawea year after year and still the lake was low, I cringe at the thought of it going that low again in the near future.

Zoops,

The catch 22 is there for sure. Thankless job as well but by own admissions and outdated master manual their was obvious flaw associated with low water years.

They identified it and manage more wisely. Nothing can be done for record rain events like the one we saw. Unless of course we want to keep the water way low. Not good at all.
