so i see fargo ramped up their crest prediction.

sat-9:30 am, the projected crest was 29.2 ft for this coming saturday march 20th.
sun-5pm, the projected crest went up to 38 feet with the same march 20th crest date.

rivers are rising fast. sounds like wahpeton is getting hit hard at the moment.

here is the link for current river levels incase somebody doesn't have it.

The warehouse across from the shop here is full of sandbags, they are taking them out faster than you can say "the gophers are done for the year".

Tis the season in the Red River Valley.  Nothing new...

I thought my guess at the crest was a bit of a stretch after the seemingly ideal conditions as far as precip and tempeatures.  But I guess not!  Will be tuning in to talk radio.

Tim, how can a steady rain be deemed as an ideal condition prior to a flood?

enslow,

That's the only precip we had in the extended period.  Yeah, in no way did it help but my point is if we had something like last year this 38 feet would be beans compared to what could have been.

We got around the inch.  Jamestown little more.  Fargo just under.  But they say this precipitation was formulated into the high water predictions.

They were way off on their predictions, as far as the time they had to river crest.  That rain really knocked the snow down.  Fargo will be soon look like a warzone.

Fargo has recieved 1.35" of rain since Tuesday March 9th. The crest prediction has changed three times the last three days, I doubt that it will actually hit 38', but it will now most likely go over 35. The good news is that it looks like the river will rise and fall fast and that we will not have a prolonged period with high levels that would put us at greater risk if we recieved alot of precipitation during that time. The river has reached these levels 4 times since 1997 inlcuding 1997 so it is not an unprecedented event, but it is still a mess. Good luck to all who are in vulnerable areas.

I think it is a good deal that the whole valley is melting at basicly the same time (north to south). by the time fargo water hits the border ours should be gone.
I say they are going to be 2 or 3 feet  off with there crest prediction hopeing for lower crest in fargo.

I think they should of started buying housees out after 97 and got perm dikes built.

riverview has it right on why don't they just give the damn river some space and build dikes instead of building a huge diversion.

There is still a lot of un-melted snow...I have heard reports from other area of the country that a larger orange/yellowish sphere is showing up in the daytime sky but it’s been a good thing it hasn’t around here.  Even though the temps maybe pushing 50 by Wednesday a strong sun would really get rid of the lasting snow and if that happens the rivers fill up faster…overland looks like it may be worse than last year there is a lot of water in the fields north of Fargo…some place in MN around Ada had flooded roads already due to ice jam on wild rice river. This slow melt is the best case scenario.  It tends to get a little depressing when you can't tell 9am from 4pm but that’s a good thing right now.
