What brands out there are good.  Can a guy get a good one for $600 or less or do you gotta spend the money to be completely happy?

Thanks boys.

How much snow do you have to move? I would not save too much money and be under powered.

Well, I'll say that when I am going to use the snow blower there is going to be a pile of snow.  Otherwise, I will just use the shovel.  That 26" of snow would have killed me if I didn't have help from solocam's snow blower.  In other words, I want it to handle drifted in wet snow say up to 2 feet high.  Realistically that isn't going to happen as often but another use for it (perhaps the most useful) will be taking out the ridge the city blade leaves when it comes by the driveway.  That can range in size but the issue there is it is compacted hard snow.  I don't want to be sally when I dig into that with the blower.

8 horse too little?  How about bare minimum for weight?  Without traction, a snow blower is worthless.

Well, I was not going to get one but a used one (Tractor Supply 2 stage 24" Huskee) for $300 just came in front of me.  So, am now inquiring.

I usually just deal with the snow by shovel because I consider it "fun" exercise.  And God knows I need it.

If you aren't gonna use it everday, sounds good to me!

Tim, I own an 8 hp old MTD( Note they make almost all of the blowers for companies to their desired specs), it has the Tecumseh motor which is not made anymore. Have at the farm a 5hp MTD as well. Simply put, would not buy the smaller unit unless a wife or kids have to run it. They do not have enough power to move any serious snow.

Looking at the current models, I see the city and many of the snow removal companies moving to the Cub Cadets. I talked with Lee with the city as to why and he said that they are a solid well built machine equal to the JD units for less money. Bearings instead of bushings that type of thing.

Stay away from the cable controlled spouts, they do not stay in place and make it miserable to move snow as you now need three hands, vibration moves the spout back instead of staying in place.

Soft knob tires will work very well and make using a unit easier than putting chains on them. Have had both, will not go back to chains. Engines are another thing to look at. Most of the new units have the Briggs which are fine but do need more long term maintenance.

In my neighborhood, we have a variety of blowers, Snapper,Toro,JD,etc... of them the Toro which was new in 09 has been in the shop the most and it has been a variety of issues from drive train, to engine. Starter has went out three times on it and it is not cheap to replace. The neighbor has a 5 year old Snapper that has worked well, it has a larger HP motor than mine and handles the snow better as a result.

Again it goes back to the old adage, more power is better!!

In my lifetime I have seen fence row to fence row farming and the return of CRP and game to the landscape. Now we face again the prosepect of fence row to fence row again! Sportsman are our own worst enemy in that we fail to look forward and focus to much on the now!

I enjoy pushing the snow around myself but there is a point when all the "fun" goes out rather quickly. Eight horse or bigger.

Does anyone have, or willing to part with a used blower?

What I am looking for is like the old toro sno pup. Very small, throw it over your shoulder but has gas engine, usually plastic "blades" about a 20 inch cut.

If you do and you want to get rid of it drop me a PM. THANKS!!!

JD are probably the cream of the crop but even the used ones are going to be over $600...with the amount of snow we've had over the last couple winters and the tendendcy to drift into rock hard hills I wouldn't reccommend anything under 8hp 24'-28" cut and at least a 12" Impeller.  However depends on how much you use it I got a Fleet Farm one four years ago and have had no problems with it I believe it's a yard machine by MTD briggs and stratton engine 8hp 28" cut

brindle is as brindle does

I noticed the cub cadet at Tractor Supply when I walked in the other day.  They seemed to have some "build" to them.  Might have to go peak at it.  I just want to buy once and be happy.  Hear good things about the John Deere but uffda, Timmy has not enough money for that!

I went with a John Deere. Paid more than most but a little less than a Honda or a Toro.

I wanted one that was built well, had a good warranty, and could be serviced and get parts locally.

So far I've loved it and have had no issues. It's heavier than the competition and has more torque, and the drive is awesome- just turn the snowblower and it puts the power to the wheels that need it.

I bought a Craftsman 24" Dual stage from Sears last year the day after Thanksgiving. It has a 179cc motor on it and was able to move pretty much anything that I put in front of it last year. I think it was around $550 and would highly recommend it.

The best snowblowers are the hondas with tracks.  They are unreal and for a big price of course.

Get as much power as you can afford.

My suggestion would be to do as little shoveling as possible.  The blower gets the snow farther away from your driveway and doesn't leave a ridge to drift in every time the wind blows.

If you live in the city and have issues with the plows leaving a ridge, NEVER let it sit.  Go to work late if you have to but get that darn ridge cleaned out or it might get like concrete.  Especially in the Spring.

I bought a Snapper about 20 years ago and it is going strong.  No engine issues but have had to do some work on the chute control.  MTD is what my brother has and I like his better and he paid significantly less.

Tim I got a new snapper and it has worked well for me. My brother has the same 1 just an older model. I would have to say that if you are wanting a blower for the heavier snow falls instead of using your man power then you better go with more HP or you will have to decrease your cutting path for the engine to keep up. Nothing sucks more then having too be out there longer then needed to get the job done. More HP=less time outside and more time on important things in life.
The bad part about the cub cadets is they have a plastic spout and I can't imagine they would hold up as long as metal. Don't know for sure just sayin. Good Luck.

I bought a Poulon Pro 2 years ago when we got that big storm on opening day of deer season in Bismarck. Everyone was sold out by like 8:30 that morning. I wanted at least an 8 horse as my neighbors 5 horse was just getting clogged with the heavy wet snow.
I got the 8.5hp with a 26" cut. It works very well and throws farther than the rest of the neighbors except for the guy with a 11hp John Deere, but was about half the price. It has not clogged on me once and the day that I bought it I did 4 driveways with it.
There are better ones out there probably (JD's, Hondas) but I have been very happy with mine. I got it for $799 and they are still the same price when they come on sale at Runnings.
