Blizzard expected in Philadelphia for Vikings-Eagles

Last update: December 25, 2010 - 5:03 PM

PHILADELPHIA - The Vikings are going to get a taste of wintry weather for the second time in seven nights.

AccuWeather is forecasting that Sunday night's game against the Eagles will be hit by a post-Christmas blizzard, one that could have winds blowing at up to 35 miles per hour.

According to the forecast on AccuWeather's website, the blizzard is expected to dump a total of 6 to 12 inches of snow, with most of it falling before the scheduled 8:20 p.m. EST (7:20 p.m. CST) kickoff time. AccuWeather also reported that "sustained winds between 25 and 35 mph will severly blow and drift the snow." The game-time temperature is expected to be in the 20s.

The Vikings played their first outdoor home game in 29 years to the day Monday, when they lost to the Chicago Bears 40-14 in a snowy, chilly night at the University of Minnesota's TCF Bank Stadium.

Monday's game was the Vikings' second consecutive home game in a row moved from the Metrodome after the roof collapsed Dec. 12 due to heavy snow accumulation from a blizzard.

The Vikings will be playing in their fifth stadium in as many games Sunday night.

Well, that should take away the Vikings high powered air attack.

Going to be a long nite in Philly. Geez it sucks to be a Vikings fan. Maybe it will be slick on the field and Vick wont run around on them to much.

This is just not our year. Maybe next year the Vikings will be treated like the Saints where after Katrina. I know this is no Katrina, it is the same but different. Katrina hit one city. This storm follows the Vikings where ever they go. Maybe a good name for this storm being it for 3 weeks now has snow as the culprit; Winter storm Chilly!

Sounds like the NFL made the right decision. However no Sunday night football tonight.

The game was changed because of public safety concerns.  I really can't argue with that.  Anybody that has been in a major metropolitan area during a major snow event knows what kind of problems need to be dealt with.  The Mayor declared a snow emergency before any snow even started falling.

????  On the radio they were talking about the mayor having given the NFL the official OKEY DOKEY on holding the game tonight saying we have this under control.  But the NFL wanted to move it to Tuesday night to garner more ratings.

I don't know how much Philly is under control this evening, but I can bet the mayor would rather his hometown team not have a mere 4 days to prep for next Sunday.

I've heard the same things too.  Still, the official NFL position is that they didn't want to flush 70,000 people out into a blizzard at Midnight.  I'm also betting that Philadelphia's Finest are breathing a sigh of relief that they don't have to deal with anything more than their normal calls in this weather.  This morning, there is a large area of the NE that is totally shut down.

Saw an article a few minutes ago about the Governor of Pennsyltucky is now up in arms about the game time having been changed.

Can't make anyone happy when you move the time, maybe this will be a lesson in that the show must go on.

Cheering for you Vikes.  Hate to see you be the same record as the horrid non-improved Lions.

Ha ha ha.  No need to comment Farnorth.  I'm having fun.

But seriously, why don't you Vikes win.  Might as well not play the game though.  I mean, Vick is God.  No one stands a chance against him.

I think  more needs to be said about how the NFL moved this game.  Last week, the Vikes and Bears played in a blizzard on a horrible field.  Traffic was a mess for everyone and everyone was miserable (except Bears fans).

The week before that, the Bears and Patriots played in a serious blizzard.  Two years ago, the NFL made the Dolphins play in a hurricane.  Goddell constantly says that "football is supposed to be played in the elements."  But when his golden-boy Vick is going to have to tough it out, they go ahead and move the game 48 hours?  It's ridiculous.
Just a nice red river cat.

Well what happened out east?  Did they get 20 inches of snow?  Or what?  If they had a forecast of 20 inches of snow and blizzard like conditions I have to say it was wise to not have the game.  As stated, in a city, that becomes a mess and a big, big mess.  Safety definitely becomes compromised.

I think they ended up with about 3 inches of snow, game was canceled due to predictions and not what was happening at the time. Like the guy said on the radio, let the people make their own decisions when it comes to their own safety. I will most likely miss this monumentas game now because I will be fishing 100 miles from home.

The Philly observing station got around a foot of snow.

Here is a map of the snow that fell in that area.
