VFW or american Legion?

Being that there are a lot of Veterans on here, I thought it would be a good place to ask. I have decided that I want to join a Veteran's organization but I can not decide which one. My question is this: Which organization would you join? American Legion or the VFW and why?
Thanks in advance!

Add the AMVETS Club to the list.

Cooter both organizations are good but to join the VFW you have had to be in a war zone. The American Legion also has guidelines like dates of enlistment.  If you go on there websites it should explain there organization membership guidelines.

Thanks ndfishin, I have looked at both websites and I am eligible for both, but what I am looking for is someone to give an opinion on why one would be better than the other. I would just do both but I only have so much free time.

I'm a member of all 3 mentioned here as well as the Navy League.  You don't have to give these organizations all you're free time.

I'm a Life Member of the Bismarck  Amvets.  I've been with the Honor Guard for about 3 years now.  Seems like there's always stuff going on there.  Every time I drive by the VFW, it looks dead.

I am a life member of the VFW.  I just did it because my uncle had gotten me a membership and he was the chapter president for awhile so I bit the bullet and joined.  I dont know a whole lot about the amvet

I can join the VFW, but not the American Legion.  I served in the Air Force from 1985 to 1989, one year of which was in Korea.  The VFW considers Korea an open campaign,  so anyone who served there since 1950 is eligible.  The American Legion has certain dates that you have to have served to join.  A life membership for the Amvets is only $180.  A VFW life membership for somone my age is $375.
