Stole this from another site, but here's what NBC thinks of hunters and fisherman.....

We were wondering what would happen to one of the better outdoor channels Versus now that it is turning to NBC Sports well here is what they think this is cut from Article on Fox News. Guess we know what they think of us fisherman.

Comcast Eyes Richer Demo

Some may argue this shift away from outdoor and non-traditional sports is ill-advised because Versus will lose its core viewers: hunting and fishing aficionados from rural and country areas.

“I don’t see that as a downside. Those are weak demographics -- older men, low income, limited education,” said Pilson. “There are channels out there that can cater to the gun and rod audience, but for the most part those channels are smaller, they don’t make as much money and they have a somewhat limited advertiser base and a weaker demographic.”

Pilson said NBC is trying to reach younger male viewers in urban and suburban areas who are well educated -- the kind of viewers that the advertisers who are paying the bills would like to reach as well.

Pretty much going the way of ESPN, which used to be non-traditional sports and hunting/fishing before it went big time.

Urban and educated really don't fit together that well...

Whatever they do is their business.   If they abandon the outdoors somebody else will have an opportunity at that market.    There is a real divide between "urban" and "rural" in this country.

Truth can suck. It's a business though and you cater to who is going to make you more money. Wise decision, just sucks for us. (and he probably worded that a little wrong)

So this is the type of comment an educated person makes? A sweeping generalization that hunters and fisherman as a whole are low income and undereducated.

My sincere thanks to all the men and women who have/are serving this great country. Freedom isn't Free.

Where is Benny Spies gonna go?  Uh oh, I said gonna.  I'm not educated enough.

The funny part about "money" and the "outdoors" is he actually has it backward.  Well, maybe not totally but it takes quite a sacrifice in other things to enjoy the outdoors OR it takes quite a checkbook to really get out in the outdoors and enjoy it.

No schmuck watching soccer invests in a 20 to 60,000 dollar pickup, a 30,000 dollar boat, about 10,000 dollars in accessories and gear, 4,000 to 6,000 in fuel costs and the list goes on.

Anyway...

I wonder where all of these poorly educated and lower income folks get all the money to buy $60k walleye boats, $150k open ocean rigs, and $4k/acre hunting parcels of land?

Personally, I wish I were that "poor".

Not that I like to watch shows of other people fishing and hunting, just got me wondering.

Yup, again another who sees similar.

Once a person is setup in his gear he is usually okay but then all the expenses of just GOING hunting or fishing continue.  And of course upgrades every now a then.  Impulse buys, etc.

I won't dispute the market is smaller than they like but wow, some of the things posted are rather short-sighted.  As someone said, a very big disconnect.

BobKat,

Versus is a channel of their own.  Not sure what it is on MidCo though but I think it's 71 if the MidCo website didn't steer me wrong.

You think that and then you run across an episode of Swamp People.  Me suspects the high faluting TV bigwigs have a mental image of us similar to what I have of cajun alligator hunters.

Ha ha ha.  Yeah no kidding.  I never thought of it.  Maybe they need to pull hunting and fishing shows off the air because there AREN'T enough people smart enough to watch such things!  We need Swamp People, Dancing with the Stars and shows like that.

Bingo!

Us low income, and undereducated outdoorsmen just dont know any better. If we did we would be buying hightop sneakers, and big boom boxes. maybe a bag of weed, spending our money on that good urban stuff. Not passing down a long living family tradion of respect for our land and its creatures.

If we're not supposed to eat animals, how come they're made out of meat?

The amount of money spent by outdoorsman/women annually is mindboggling if you dealve into it.  It is a huge industry.  We were laughing when I was out is WY hunting goats this year that my pickup would be a good one to steal or break into.  Three of us had about $6,000 worth of gear and guns in that baby and the fact it was a brand new truck didn't make the tally any less!!

I can't stand the so-called educated "dipshits" that sit behind a desk and throw out generalizations about things they know absolutely nothing about.  Pilson probably thinks his poop doesn't stink but rather reaks of education when in fact he probably got to where he is today because of who he knew and not what!!

"When we step into the outdoors, we have the privilege of standing in the presence of God through the power and majesty of His creation. That makes hunting more than a sport or a hobby. It's a calling to something greater. And that transforms the places that we stand into something more than a cropfield or a pasture or a mountain. It makes that place Hallowed Ground."

I'll speculate this Pilson character is an Obama supporter and is just doing his part to help reduce popularity of guns and gun use.   They would rather have kids sitting in front of a TV playing video games.
