UND begins transitioning away from nickname and logo

Dear Campus Community:

I want to bring you up to date on recent events related to the nickname and logo.  As you may know, the North Dakota Legislature met in Special Session in November and, among other issues, took action to rescind the law mandating that the University of North Dakota use the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.  The new law, which became effective Dec. 1, allows UND to begin transitioning away from the nickname and logo, in compliance with the Aug. 15 directive of the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education, charging the University to "substantially complete the [transition] process by the end of December 2011."

To that end, I have directed the Athletics Department and the Office of University Relations to initiate transition processes with the goal of substantially completing them by the end of December.  For example, you will see references to the nickname and the use of the logo disappearing from the UND web site, except where it makes sense to retain them for historical or similar reasons.  The University will also remove nickname Images and verbiage from University owned facilities, except for their use in historical or similar applications, such as championship banners.

It is important to understand that the transition process will not be entirely completed by Dec. 31.  For example, the new uniforms for the UND men's hockey team won't be available until late February.  As a result, the men's hockey team will finish the rest of the regular season in their current uniforms.  Another example relates to our contracts with several vendors licensed to produce UND apparel and merchandise.  Under the terms of the contracts, we must provide at least a 90-day notice of a change to the contract.  That means licensed vendors will be allowed to produce apparel and merchandise with the Fighting Sioux name and logo through March 31, 2012, and will have until June 30, 2012, to sell off their stock.  Retailers will be able to sell Fighting Sioux apparel and merchandise as long as supplies last, but there will be no more production of Fighting Sioux apparel and merchandise under existing licenses after March 31, 2012. You can find more information about the transition process under "UND's Transition Process:  Frequently Asked Questions" on the Nickname/Logo web site at http://nickname.und.edu/logo.

As we work together over the next month to transition away from the nickname and logo, I ask all UND employees, especially unit heads, to help with the process.  If you use the nickname and logo in your area, please take steps to remove their use.  If you want to identify an area where you think a change needs to be made, please contact Peter Johnson, Office of University Relations, at peter.johnson@email.und.edu.

Thank you for your help and cooperation.  Together, we will effect an orderly transition.

Sincerely,

Robert O. Kelley

what's going to happen if the Standing Rock Sioux group is successful in their attempt to keep the logo.  They are wanting to do whatever it takes.  And I don't think they care about the sporting aspect of it to the effect that they care whether or not the Sioux can compete in playoffs, etc.

 BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

May those responsible reap what they've sewn.

Anyone up for some state-owned casinos who's profits would eliminate both property and personal income tax?   Might as well stage them in areas that shortcut those which currently reside on reservations, that's where the gambling traffic already is.

that's a good idea.  and it's also a trend that's starting to roll all over the country.  and it's working out great for the local and state governments.

And they can't obtain or use a nickname for something like 2 years.  Good old University of North Dakota _________  I like just plain old Univ. of ND (with no nickname; ever)....

Sounds like the hockey team will still use the current University of ND Fighting Sioux jersey(s)  as the new ones aren't  expected until late Dec-Early January

Yeah because every tribe in ND is responsible.....riiiigggghhhhttttt.........

You usually have decent posts - Sadly...you went full on stupid on this one.

Now if I were to address the idea of state owned casino's....you can have them...they are mecca for drunk morons and all the trash that come to them. Best thing for most tribes would be getting rid of them and the ilk that they draw...

Damn right the blame falls on every tribe in the state, they sat idle and let things come to this. 1 set of laws to follow would certainly uncomplicate enforcement as well.

Change the stupid name!    I'm totally sick of the controversy, and also sick of spending hard earned tax money that would be better spent for more important things.

Forget the retribution against the Indians.  That's as Childish as I've seen.  From poster (s) that I ordinarily  respect, too.    Not that I'm against state owned casinos, but not simply to "Fix Those @@#$#%^%## Injuns!"    Yuk!

there is a huge group from Standing Rock that are fighting this on their own.  or haven't you heard that.  I've heard the representative for this group numerous times the past couple weeks.  they're not very happy about it

All this because political correctness has run amok in this country.  Change it to Warriors and move on.

Sure sure....

I can see where the Mandan, Hidatsa's and Arikara really give a shit, or have any influence on the sioux name...or where the Chippewa's would have any pull with the NCAA....

Yeah....blame them all - damn indians...

And one set of laws...sounds good -completely and  totally unrelated to the Sioux name...just as the above tribes are completely unrelate to the sioux name...but sure...lets throw that in as well.

Hey lets throw in those other pesky sioux indians too - that are suing the NCAA over it...on behalf of UND...

Damn them all....LMAO

What else can we throw in that has zero to do with the issue.  Hmmm how anout frybread or indian taco's....

Oh I know moccasins...damn them...one set of shoes for all....lets even the scoreboard and get them where it hurts...

There is a group from Spirit Lake trying to fight the NCAA over this but I haven't heard of a group from Standing Rock.  Maybe I am wrong though.

The sad fact of it is, where were all these supporters for the name say a year or two ago, when it would have gained more speed and support. Day late and a dollar short is all I see.  I will be disappointed in seeing such a great nickname and logo put away for no other reason than a corrupt institution flexing its muscles to show off what it can do... Oh well maybe next they will show how mighty the NCAA is and make all schools with animal mascots change them too.....

I think they assumed cooler heads were going to prevail and the issue was going to be resolved.  but they should have been very vocal this whole time.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Ron His Horses Thunder pretty much block a vote down in the Standing Rock Reservation?   He is a piece of work.
