I am in the market for about 4 trolling rod/line counter reel combos.  What have you guys liked?  What to stay away from?

At least for reels, I like the Tica seaspirit reels that I have. Well made and they have two different models depending on what your budget is. I use the Seaspirit SS-R model.

I bought 2 Cabelas Gold label trolling rods 2 yrs ago. They are 8 footers, can't remember how stiff. I put okuma line counter reels on them. They have done me no wrong. Rods were on sale for 50 each. I think the reels went on sale at fleet farm for either 29 or 39 bucks. Not a bad way to get a couple decent combos.

The Shimano Tekota reels are what I use. They have a great drag and are built to last. As far as rods go, to me I guess it all depends on what I'm pulling. I use different rods for different cranks and presentations.

Check out the Scheel's trolling rods and combos. Lots of lengths and actions at good prices.

Diawa Sealine line counters for reels.  27's if just using fireline or power pro, 47's for leadcore.  Berkley Gary Roach extending 8.5 foot and Jason Mitchell two piece 14 foot'rs for out the side.

I have Diawa Sealines and Accudepth's.  I've never had a problem with either, but the sealines are a little bit smoother.  I use size 47 for leadcore and 27 for everything else.

I've used many different rods, I like the cabelas depthmaster gold in 9' telescoping for planer boards, I use the 5' for leadcore.  I also have the 12' scheels pro classics, and they take some getting used to but work well.  I have used the scheels 5' rods too and like the cabelas better, others will say the opposite, personal preference.  The key is a soft tip to absorb shock especially when trolling no strech line.

I like my shorties for out the back of the boat. The ones I have are the original ones made by Ron Wilson from the cities.  Out on the sides I have 2 12ft rods I built.  They are cabelas blanks and the eyelets are acid wrapped (they spiral until underneath the blank).  The thing I like about these rods is that lead peels off so much easier because it doesn't come in contact with the blank (less friction).  I have some Mitchell trolling rods that I run for fireline and cabelas trolling rods (fiber glass) for boards, dipsy divers, and down riggers.  I have a few okuma reels I like, but it's hard to beat Diawa Sealine reels.  27's for fireline/mono and 47's for lead.

Amen.. I was on a great bit on the big lake last year pre fishing for the cup and was losing alot of fish right after they unloaded on the crank due to the aggressive bite and the rods I was using. I switched to a 12 ft noodle rod and didnt miss a fish. Meanwhile you were hangin out in Douglas Bay getting ready to win the cup baitin!

i have the scheels trolling rods and i like mine, I like the warranty the best the salesman said i could basically buy them and smash one in the car door and they would replace it free of charge. i dont remember what daiwa reels i have i know there not the sealines but there the ones that are already on the scheels combos and so far i have been very happy with them.

Another option most people over look with the exception of the samon guys is adding a snubber between the lead core and your leader, works like a champ and you could use a 2x4 for a rod and not loose fish.

Do the snubbers take away the action on your rod tip like mono?  Just wondering if you can tell when you have a crank slightly fouled up?

That is a bit tricky indeed, not as bad as running straight mono; you will notice settle thumps is the best way to describe, it is not as amplified as running straight line to line.

I dont runn them all the time but I always have them aboard. As mentioned above with LIPRIPPER that is an example for me to break into that box. They have different size ones to, shorter the better works the best.

From what I have found to be the best reel Ahab is Okuma convector. I have used the Cabelas, Scheels, Diawa and imho none of them come close. They have metal gears along with a great drag and a nice big long handle so you dont have to spin the reel so many times bringing in 200' of line. As for rods. I think the Jason Mitchell are some of the best around, especially the 5' shorties. The scheels 8'6" are very good just not quite the action from the JM. I currently have the Scheels 8'6" and am changing to the JM 10'6" for the reason stated above along with a little more distance out from the boat but dont want the 14' rods. way to long, unless you are running a 6 rod setup. Check out the Convector. You wont be dissapointed. Better yet come to Bismarck and I'll take you out trolling. Then you can see for yourself.
