Tobacco Gardens / White Earth Bay Area - Tuesday, February 7, 2012
Finally got out to the lake last friday(better late report than never I guess), things started off slow but turned out to be a good time later. Arrived between 9-10 am cst and started east of beacon point and things were very slow. I'm not sure if we missed the morning bite or if we were just in a bad spot, the current that was moving under the ice was alot faster than I have ever remembered seeing down there as well. Anyway picked up a couple small pike on smelt in about 8 fow. While looking for walleyes/sauger anywhere from 17-36 fow turned up nothing so we moved west. After moving closer to tobacco garden bay about 1:30 pm we picked up one sauger on a wind tip up with a pink weasel jig, pretty sure that fish was just laying down there and dropped the bait down on his head. After that things slowed down a bit but around 3:30 things really picked up. Only had one flag up witha  small walleye on it but they were really chasing the jigs. Pink was a good color and I was doing well on a perch northland forage minnow tipped with a minnow. Anyway by 6pm we ended up with 5 keeper sauger and a 3-4 pound pike, threw a handful back to grow a bit as well. Like I said started really slow and we ended up redeeming ourselves a bit at the end, not sure if it was the move or the time of day though. I better add the ice beyond beacon over deep water is about 5 inches less than west of the point so dont get too brave out there, be careful and good luck!

Two years ago Rex, from Tobacco Gardens, and I were privileged to one of those once in a lifetime events. Two sauger, one crank. Really! No wonder I can’t wait to get to the lake. It’s been a long time since I was up at 4:30 and on the road before 5am. Something about Tobacco Gardens brings out the kid in me.

Western Sakakawea is home to the fall bite. It won’t happen today but it won’t be long. Sept 15 or so marks the beginning.  I have a friend from Williston whom I expect to hear from twice this fall. Both times to brag about the huge walleye he just caught. Maybe that’s not bragging. Steve is just stating the facts.

We pull in around 7:15 and get the boat ready for the water. Rex is right behind and we exchange fishing info. He suggests I head west out of Tobacco. After coffee and morning radio we pick up our guest for the day, Gene, year round resident of Tobacco Gardens.

I burn about 50 bucks in gas looking things over and finally decide to drop in and burn $30 more in cranks on willows and northern. A smart man would pull up and make a move. I didn’t, least not till I was able to dump two more cranks.

Geez, I hate days when every snag hangs on for dear life and every northern inhales the plastic down to the gizzard. Gene just informed me that I have about 23 more to go before I reach my daily allowance. Bull, just like the weatherman he is way off. I would guess 35 to be more accurate.

All we have to account for morning’s fishing is where not to go and a heart full of badlands. Not a bad start. Every draw and bowl leaves me thinking we are just moments from a monster badland’s buck. Anticipation is half the fun right? No such luck.  I did get a cool photo of a prehistoric petrified stump.

We pass some campers who took the paddleboat across the lake and set up camp. I mean a nice camp. I asked if they had any fish. The reply, “Yep, got one of these and I think the other one is a carp. The “one of these” was a drum. My kids see this picture of the camp and I won’t hear the end of it. “Daddy, when can we go camping?”  I should have had kids when I was young.

It’s just before noon and the beacon is in sight. After releasing our share of whitebass and northern it finally happens. First Keeper! Maybe it’s coming together. More northern and a bass or two later and we have our second fish out of 9 feet. I’m feeling a pattern here.

Time to meet my guest: Gene ain’t no novice at this game. We were introduced just this morning and like any fishermen a couple of key questions get things warmed up fast. Few weeks ago he released a 42 inch northern over by New Town. Last winter he lost a 12 pound walleye at the hole. Several years back he set, and still holds, the state record in MT for sturgeon. What’s that? How big? Ya, I think he did mention that. 60 pounds!

Gene has been in the boat all morning waiting patiently for a chance to reel in a fish. I’ve been holding on to the idea of getting some video shot but it’s one of those days. It just ain’t gonna happen. I decide to let it go and get Gene into the action.

Another rod bends and I’m guessing northern. It is coming in heavy. 20 feet from the boat and all of the sudden it lets go. In comes my crank and a perch. Boy it would be tuff being a fish. Crank ~Perch~Northern, the chain of life. The perch ain’t looking so good but who knows, maybe he will make it only to be swallowed alive another day. I like being close to the top of the food chain.

The 5 to 8 mph wind is now up to 15 so we set up at Tractor Bay. What’s that? Ain’t heard of Tractor Bay. That’s cause I just named it. With water dropping fast guess what shows up. Geez am I glad I didn’t power into that chunk of steel when it was submerged.

Anyway, we start cranking in the direct vicinity and head west in 9 feet. I get the crazy idea to put orange in the water. By now a mudline is beginning to show and I’m thinking, go with something bright. Gene is glad I did. Number 4!

I was hoping to have a limit by three so I look up and ask for help. Moments later we have our second double of the day. Gene gets the first rod in and turns out to be the day’s best northern. I’m confident the other fish is a northern as he pulled line like a carp hooked in the fin.

Gene is working on the fish and I’m beginning to wonder why a northern would stay down like that. Somewhere in the fog it dawns on me. That ain’t no northern Schoneck, get the net. Best fish of the day. You go Gene. I check the GPS for time, 2:56.  Thank you.

White bass and northerns up the ying yang on minnows, with the occasional drum throw in just to give you the hope you've got a nice walleye on.  One good walleye was dumb enough to hit my jig.

I couldn't buy a walleye today.  Tried jigging mostly from 5-20 feet...nothing but a few northerns and bass.  Even swallowed my pride a drug a crank around for awhile.  Conditions were about as perfect as a guy could ask for.  I must suck.

There is some good walleye fishing out of Lunds Landing for those who can find them. They seem to be really hot then not. You find a little spot get 2-3 fish quick even doubles... then nothing for hours. Got 4 nice eyes and some good white bass and northern action. I pulled cranks all day and the one that looked just like a little perch did amazing, all the walleye came off that lure.  Some nice fella's at the cleaning station had 10 nice fish and they said it was a moving game and better a little deeper and better on spinners and worms. I got all my walleye in 7-10 feet but i saw them out fishing in at least 16. They would start shallow and head deeper. I got a pretty big northern that bit so hard on my crank it bent the tail and crushed it
I am happy to see some good fishing up this way now that the water has been high for a few years. Hope the core slows down what its letting out as i would like the water level to stay a couple feet higher than it is now. Most of the upper river is drying out good now. flood plain drying out near Williston.

Williston, you’ve got more than oil!

Biggest Catfish ever and now biggest Walleye of the year. This one has us guessing. Heavy, straight down just like a Walleye but then off for a run to the side just like a Northern. Tenacious, won’t give up, fighting like an all star wrestler. What is it?

Lund’s Landing and Lewis and Clark State Park share the north shore of Lake Sakakawea just miles from Williston. Today we launched out of Lund’s Landing, a sweet spot on the prairie that proudly displays the care of Jim and Analene. Lund’s trademark of distinction, everything homemade with a touch of class. You’ll like it here.
We headed east with no place in particular in mind. Some days you just go fishing and there are few good reports right now. The water on the west end of Sakakawea is a different color than the rest of the lake. It has to do with badlands sediment flowing out of Montana. Not bad, just a different color. It is the first thing I always notice, as water color determines lure color.

The first flat I get to we slip inside the flooded tree line and set up shop in 10-12 feet. I have a couple of jointed 5’s in Firetiger out followed by a Rip Shad and RS-4. It only takes moments for the trees to find their first victim. My just purchased six dollar jointed 5. Geez, you could have waited a while.

If you like Northern fishing this area is going to be spectacular in a few years. We lost track somewhere around 8 and the last two were picture fish. A couple of years and they would be bragging rights. No shortage on Whitebass. They keep us entertained while waiting for our first Walleye.

Turning the corner I see something that reminds me of Parshall Bay in the Van Hook Arm. By late July and August most fishermen with common sense write off back bays. 78 degree water temps and smelt running for deep water are just two good reasons. So why am I smiling inside?

As I zoom out on the GPS I notice a creek channel meandering through the bay and the similarities of Parshall Bay are obvious. Shallow, flat, creek channel, it has it all. We unhook a couple more Northern and Whitebass before we find what we are looking for.

Ever wonder how those crankers pull 4 lines without hair pulling tangles? It is easier than you might think. For me the secret is in the lure choices. I don’t follow the traditional short rod-long rod approach or even running two rods straight out the back and two out the side. There is an easier approach.

I run my back rods level and always have the lure with the deepest dive curve set on these two. My front rods I run at 10 o’clock and they have the shallower dive curve lures. For example right now I’m using jointed 5’s and jointed Grappler Shads. The five’s are set at 30 feet back and the Grapplers are set at 60 feet back.

You can do this with any combination of lures that have different dive curves. 50/50 is ideal, but it is seldom it works out so well. As long as I have separation and can run at the right depth with both lures I’m happy. Just be careful reeling in and letting out and you will be fine.

By now we are way back in the bay, deeper than common sense allows. If you try this at least no one will see you as we didn’t see a boat all day. First fish is confirmation I’ve not lost my mind and a second confirms this is a Parshall Bay look-a-like.

Next fish is heavy, straight down, feels like a Walleye but runs like a Northern. I was more than surprised to see the oversized Carp. Interesting, we were just talking about how we always catch a 20 lb Carp or two on cranks in Parshall Bay. Williston you got something here.

I don’t know what it is with Williston. Early in the season I landed my biggest ever Catfish from the confluence area. To sweeten the memories, I just released my biggest Walleye of the season. Williston, you got more than oil!

Tried White Earth Sat. morning after hearing a couple good reports.  Pulled lindys with leeches through the trees on the point and had a couple bites but no luck there.  Saw one guy catch a few nice keepers in the trees using slip bobbers so we gave that a shot.  We were in about 13ft and only caught a drum.  The other guy was in 9-10ft and caught quite a few but the bite appeared to die out at 11am or so.  Then went out to the main lake to the east with spinners and caught a few pike up to 8lbs.  Called her quits when the sun and jet skis came out.

That was my last shot at the big lake till late August unfortunately since I am leaving for some work training.
    Good luck everyone!!

Had a rough outing last night fishing out of Lund's Landing.  Went out after work and immediately went over to Hofflund bay.  Worked with crawlers and leaches from 5ft out to 20ft.  Marked most fish around 12ft but couldn't get a reaction from them.  Also tried pulling cranks to no avail.  Not a single bite.  Talked with another boat and same thing.  The weather that was moving in might have turned them off but that is two weeks in a row with nothing to show out there.
I guess we are Van Hook bound this weekend!

Warm grassy water + Wind = Walleye. Yup.

Got a late start as the battery for our motor went dead over winter, first time out this year. Was hoping to get out earlier this year but so busy with lots of things, and bad weather. Put in at white earth and saw the water was stained but not as muddy as it looks, can see a foot in it at least. Took my new wife out for the first time ever fishing for walleye and she had the hot pole today. Water was warm, 68-70 degrees so we fished shallow with cranks. In the bay we hooked into a fish but never landed it but we moved around the point to the girl scout camp and thats where my walleye senses started to tingle. Grassy shore with waves beating onto it, up behind the trees from years past. She got the first one... little guy but still a keeper, and the second one about 10 minutes later a nice big 4 pounder and boy did she smile for that. biggest fish she has ever caught. then it was more small walleye, 12-13 inch all in the same little hole we found. we took 11 keepers from noon until 5 pm when it just stopped dead. My dad managed to catch 2 more of those nice big ones and we had a few in the 17 inch range as well.

At the cleaning station it was 11 walleye and probably the best walleye fishing i have found in 2 years. Firetiger JSR-7 and Little Ripper Deep Firetiger were the hot lures for the day though we did manage 2 fish from lindy rigs and crawlers once the cranks turned off when the wind died.

Did not see many other boats out and did not see any other fish caught besides ours, talked to 1 other boat they had 2. We noticed everybody seemed to be fishing to deep, trying in the 16 foot range, we found our fish 8 to 12 feet, mostly kept the boat right in 10.5 feet.
