Tire problems

Over the last 2 months or so my dad's pickup has gone through all 4 tires.  The tire linings have all had a hole in them.  The guys at the tire shop have been saying it's on account of holes cause by rocks.  So what I really want to know is if rocks can really puncture the actual tire and pop a hole in the tube?  Has anyone ever had this problem?  Just doesn't seem logical.

That doesn't sound normal,   Is there any reason why he couldn't go with tubeless tires ?    I had tubes in a couple of  trucks  and  they were nothing but a big headache.  Everything I drive is tubeless now and no more problems.

i delivered tires for 5yrs out of fargo. i have had to pick up several tires for road hazard warranty due to rocks going through the face(tread part) and sidewalls. these were on tubeless tires. anything sharp will cut a tire if run over at the right angle. ive even had to pick up tractor tires with deer antlers stuck in them. so yeah a rock can  cut your tire, seen it first hand plenty of times.

Go with more plies.  A 6ply tire is more resistent to puncture than a 4ply tire.  Anyone who lives near scoria knows to beef up the plies on their tires.  If its a ten ply tire on a 3/4 ton and still punching holes, go for harder rubber.  Usually lasts longer on tread but sacrifice ride quality.

where is he driving 4 holes is possible but not very likely.  How much tread depth is left if he runs them to the cords it will happen more often.  What breed of tire.oil field people run on gravel 80% of the time and most of those roads have things that fall off laying on the road

Unless the rims(wheels) are split rims and some bias tires get rid of the tube type and go tubeless

Let me guess, lives or drives around the western part of the state with the gravel roads that are now dirt with large boulders poking out of the ground?

Might be he likes to drive a little too fast over those kinds of roads.

Otherwise, I am kind of at a loss to explain that streak of bad luck.  I've had tires in the past that seemed to be nail magnets, but in all my miles I think I've only had like 3 or 4 tires with rock caused flats, and that's with a lot of miles on scoria.

I have been in the tire business for a quite some time, sounds to me you need a tire with more plies, example a standard load tire has 4 plies c rated is 6 plies d rated is 8 and E rated is 10. the E rated 10 ply is probably what you need in your case with sharp rocky roads. one other thing you need to look at if your running tubes in these tires on a newer pickup, get them the F out, they can heat up at high speeds on the road and blow a hole right through your tire, its fine to use tubes in an old farm truck that gets driven to a field now and then, but not if you use it for highway use driving 65 - 70 mph. old farmers around my area still think they need tubes in everything, if it is a radial tire and in descent shape, theres no need for tubes. I dont know where you live but in my area, its against our policy for a shop to even put tubes in something that we know is a daily driver, unless they are bias tires which no one runs anymore. I would suggest a 6 ply for a half ton and always a 10 ply for 3/4 ton or 1 ton. check out discounttire.com and get some descent tires man. before the price increase, heard tires are going up march 1st between 5 and 22%.

Thanks guys.  One thing is though, that we've been driving these roads for the last 10 years with the same tires and only now do we start getting flats.  Never had the problem before.
