I'm looking at getting a set of chains for my pickup. Who has experience running chains? I am looking at a set of Thule chains, but I want to be sure they are what I am needing as they are almost 5 bills for a set of 4. Let's hear some chatter about different brands, tensioner styles, likes/dislikes, pro's/con's. There's still some time to fish, and I want to be able to get out there, and pulling my house with snow shoes sucks.

I havent been on the ice without chains for a month now.  Amazing what a difference they make.  Dont have any experience with thule chains mine are more aggresive than the thule chains I saw in the picture but I have to tighten mine after driveing a little.  I will say if you think you need them put them on before getting stuck much easier.  Dont spin them if at all possible doesnt take much to dig a hole in the ice.
you gonna set steel or whistle dixie

I've run V-bar type chains on F-150's from '95, '01, and '05.  I use 2 fairly long rubber bungee cords per tire to keep them tight.  When not in use I roll them up and zip tie them to keep them rolled up.  I also zip tie the latch and hook together so I can find them when I need them.  You can put 4 tire chains, all the bungees you'll need and a set of jumper cables inside of Rubbermaid's small Action Packer.

I run 2 on a posi-rearend.  Mine work fine but i have to tighten them once after about 30yds.  I would practice putting them on @ home 1st before you go out.  Also what kraft sd, put them on before you get stuck and definitely do not spin your tires.

So how does one go about not spinning tires on a 4 wheel drive chevy? It seems like my tires which are toyo M-55 studded snow tires, like to break free. Should I be running in 4 low with the chains on? Or are you saying take it easy into things, go until you stop, and then back up and do it again.

I almost always run in 4-low W/chains for the added control.  The slower speed you're likely to run in 4-low MIGHT just save you from getting in to something so deep/far that you can't get out on your own.

Learning to control a vehicle with the throttle vs. the brakes will (IMO) make you a better driver.

I was always taught not to spin the tires w/ chains on, don't go over 20-25 mph etc...Maybe that is not exactly right but if you are giving it the onion and you throw a chain, there goes your brake lines, fender, wheel well and whatever else they catch on.  On a year like this, it is just easier to take a snowmobile rather than risk damaging your drive train imo.
