It opens for me. Seems to be the consensus. The polls I found most Americans do favor a balanced approach of spending cuts and revenue increases especially when the taxes are on the very rich and corporations who are paying little or no tax.

Don't know if I don't disagree with that. This problem is not going to go away by only reducing spending, there are going to have to be tax increases. Hopefully they close a bunch of loopholes and simplify the code as a first step. It'll be interesting to see what they two sides will agree on.

I favor cutting EVERYTHING from the Federal budget that ISN'T either Nat'l defense or infrastructure as that's the only 2 businesses that the Fed Gov't actually has a mandate to preform.  EVERYTHING else can fall to the states and municipalities.

Our current tax structure is completely upside down, a complete 180 from where it should be.  Your highest tax rate/bill SHOULD be to your municipality, maybe the county, but certainly not further from your control than the state you live within.  Such a system would ENSURE political accountability for how laws are created and how $$ is allocated.  Under such a system if you wanted to be a "Sancturay City", your localities residents could pay for it.

I think we need both spending cuts and some tax increases.  It wasn't the poor, elderly, and disabled in this country who caused it to be in the shape it is.  It was those we elected and the wealthiest in our country who "bought" them those seats in congress.  And, I do believe a BIG part of those stimulus dollars went to the country's corps and richest Americans as we bailed them out for their foolishness and sucking our companies dry so they had no reserves for rainy days.  It's only fair they put up a little too.  They reaped the biggest rewards.  And, it's time we as Americans quit expecting the gov't to do everything for us.  And that includes making sure people don't rip our gov't off.  I'm always reading on here people bitching about someone they know taking advantage of government programs.  Quit bitching and start reporting them!!!  It's your civic duty to do so.  Quit expecting the gov't to "hire" someone to do that and then once again bitch because gov't costs so much.  They wouldn't have to hire someone if you'd speak up.  Man up!!  It's YOUR money!

absolutely.  And I think we need to scrap the current tax code and go flat tax.

Supporting tax increases is about the same as shooting yourself in the foot.  Those increases won't solve anything and the money will be lost in the "Void".  We don't need higher taxes, we just need more people paying taxes.

No Federal taxes withheld, straight up Nat'l sales tax on everything.  Food, fuel, housing rent/purchase, etc, etc, etc.  Everyone pays.  If you want to tax the rich at a higher rate, tax the stuff rich folks buy at a higher rate.  Corporations pay sales tax on every single thing they procure at every level, NO deductions or exceptions for anyone or anything.  The only way to avoid paying the tax is no purchases at all.

So what you are saying is all the spending and programs of the federal government are all worth while and run so efficiently we just can't cut anything substantial?

Some of you are in favor of increasing taxes??? You really think thats gonna help solve this problem? The last thing these idiots need is more of our money to spend. They need to cut spending. PERIOD. With out tax increases.

It obvious the spending isn't gonna stop. The last thing I'm gonna do is agree to give them more of my money to line their pockets and spend on teaching my kids gay history. Are you friggen kidding me. Pull your head out of your arses.

we should have assumed it was a bogus claim.  honestly we all know there is basically no support for across the board tax hikes.

Sadly Al Gore said it best... even Rush made mention to that earlier in the week.

What is Up should be down, and what is down should be up...

The federal is simply too damn big... and if you think unemployment will lessen if you tax the top 5%-10% more, think again.
Get ready for MASSIVE inflation from it... and job losses going form general trim downs to moving more jobs overseas... creating a runaway effect.

You need to cut the big dogs a tax break. NOW... that and we need to lower the federal spending now.... they are creating a damn entitlement state.... they simply seem to forget that after so many $$ for govt programs, WHERE DOES THE EXTRA MONEY COME FROM WHEN ITS ALL DRIED UP?

I'm the devil's son..... call me young gun.

Who said anything about across the board tax hikes???  I love how the righties try to change the subject and intent.  THE POLLS: A Gallup poll, cited by the White House as the main basis for Obama's statement, actually found that 69 percent supported tackling the deficit with a mix of spending cuts and tax increases.
Also there is the Quinnipiac poll this week that showed a majority favored raising the taxes on the welathy and corporations as part of the debt control.

This is kind of basic.  Obviously some here do not want to be a member of the very small minority!
