California Employment at Record Low

The percentage of working-age Californians with jobs has fallen to a record low, and employment may not return to pre-recession levels until the second half of the decade, according to a research group.

Just 55.4 percent of working-age Californians, defined as those 16 or older, had a job in July, down from 56.2 percent a year earlier and the lowest level since 1976, the Sacramento- based California Budget Project said in a report released late yesterday.

California’s 12 percent unemployment rate in July, the nation’s second-highest after Nevada, compared with 9.1 percent nationwide. The most-populous state lost 1.4 million jobs during the recession that began three years ago, and has gained back only 226,800, or about 17 percent, according to the report.

Alissa Anderson, deputy director of the research group, which concentrates on issues facing low- and middle-class Californians, said women have disproportionately trailed men in regaining jobs.

“Women represent nearly half of the workforce,” Anderson said in a telephone interview. “They gained just one of the 10 jobs added.”

Job losses in local government, health care and other industries where women make up a large portion of the workforce contributed to the weak employment picture. Women have lost jobs in industries such as retail and financial services, while men in those fields gained.

“As businesses cut costs, the first thing to go is administrative support positions where women tend to work,” Anderson said.

and the worst part is, it'll keep getting worse.  I honestly don't think there's any hope for Kalifornistan to right the ship.  They are so entrenched in the liberal way I don't think they can change.  And until they decide to rid themselves of illegals there isn't much shot for them.  Which brings me to another issue.  The numbers of illegals in ND is staggering right now.  I saw one with his pregnant girlfriend in Walmart yesterday.  I thought, "great here comes another legal baby attached to two illegal parents".  And we'll get to pay for it.  ND needs a law like Arizona and we need it fast.  By the time the legislature meets again it'll probably be too late.  The only good thing is they seem to disappear come winter.  So I'm hoping for another nasty one lol.

I don't like illegal immigrants in this country any more than any one else, but how the f#$k do you know they were here illegally?? Did you ask about their paperwork or just figure because they don't fit the norm of most North Dakotans they must have snuck across the border?

eyexer-I see you're profiling so early into the day? And btw Is it the liberal way for a blue state to put more into the treasury then it takes out unlike most "red" states?
How did you know the guy you saw was an illegal? Did you interview him and his wife as you strode by?

don't take my word for it.   a buddy of mine is the head of border patrol for this area.  he tells me it's fast becoming a huge problem.  I've spent a ton of time around illegals, and I know enough spanish to know when their illegal or not.  And before the bashers start giving me the "oh you know everybody" routine, here is Pete's bio.  Note the Border Patrol portion.  His office is in the portal port.  http://www.classmates.com/directory/public/memberprofile/list.htm?regId=5373895

Profiling, stereotype, blah, blah, blah
America- speak english
North Dakota- smile and wave, open doors for others, especially older women and men
If you have a problem with either of those two, get out of my state and never come back.

Please humor us with ONE "blue state" that has a surplus.  I'm assuming we can agree that a surplus means "taking in" more revenue than spending.

gutshot-I was referring to states paying more in taxes then they receive back from the government. The majority of "red" states do take more government money then they pay into the treasury. This isn't true with blue states. As far as over all surpluses even after taking government money there only a few that show balance no matter what color fo which I'm sure you must be aware.

hmmm since federal income tax is static from state to state of course the large blue states would generate more federal taxes then smaller red states like ND.... DUH

That study is per capita. Two Air Force bases, nukes, the state in the upper tier of percentage of population aged 65 and over, and Native Americans, will do that.

Look at Virgina in the study.    There are many military installations there.

Are you ever going to post the link to the study you are referring to?

Hardwater-But it would be a bad deal for most other red states. On average, citizens of states with strong Republican majorities get back more from the federal government than they pay in. Kentucky receives $1.51 from Washington for every dollar its citizens pay in federal taxes. Alabama gets back $1.66. Louisiana receives $1.78. Alaska, $1.84. Mississippi, $2.02. Arizona, $1.19. Idaho, $1.21. South Carolina, $1.35. Oklahoma, $1.36. Arkansas, $1.41. Montana, $1.47, Nebraska, $1.10. Wyoming, $1.11. Kansas, $1.12.

On the other hand, fiscal secession would be a boon to most blue states. The citizens of California -- harder hit by the recession than most -- receive from Washington only 78 cents for every tax dollar they send to Washington. New Yorkers get back only 79 cents on every tax dollar they send in. Massachusetts, 82 cents. Michigan, 92 cents. Oregon, 98 cents.

In other words, blue states are subsidizing red states. The federal government is like a giant sump pump -- pulling dollars out of liberal enclaves like California, New York, Massachusetts, and Oregon -- and sending them to conservative places like Montana, Idaho, Oklahoma, Arizona, Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska, and the Old South.

The point I'm making is quit with the hypocrisy. I have no problem with states like N.Dak. receiving payments for ag. simply because of the economics of the industry. But to say "red" states are the only fiscally responsible states is not reality but only political rhetoric.. In reality very few are, red or blue. Check the poverty rates of "red" states. This has to be dealt with and in effect blue states with a disparity in tax dollars are subsidizing these.
