If you are asking about Lake Sakakawea bring your binoculars.  Although, with the lake coming up you can get KINDA close to the water.  Corp has rules in place that hinder humans from camping along the shorelines of Sakakawea.  Why?  We cause damage to the ecosystem or something like that.

Other than that, we do need some additional information on where you hope to camp.  The season is here!

Just about any small lake in the state. New Johns, Sweatbriar, Fish Creek.

I've tented for ever and have a difficult time finding good places also.  It's no fun to pitch a tent in the middle of all the fith wheels.  I enjoy tenting but it's just not as fun anymore with the limited access on Sakakawea.  Now I'm in the eastern part of the state and would love to know of some good places to pitch the tent.  I also want to be on a body of water that is lage enough for tubing and decent fishing.

Suggestions anyone???

Icelandic State Park by Cavalier has a decent tenting area between the boat landing and the swimming beach.  Very good tubing lake.  Fishing not so much.

Graham's Island primitive area is good for tenting.  Not right on the water but very good place to go.  Fills up on weekends but can make reservations.

Well there is Brewer, Ashtabulah (any of the places), Devils Lake (Grahams Island or Casino), Moon Lake (by VC), many small lakes around Lidgerwood you could probably camp at with a bit of scouting, Dead Colt, or Larimore Dam.  Most of the small lakes in the area have some option forcamping.  Look not that far into MN and there are even more.  Maplewood State Park is beautiful, with the potential for decent fishing on Lida.

If you are on the eastern half of ND, Stump Lake has a nice campground that you can tent close to the water, big lake for your tubing, stay away from the trees and stumps. Fishing is pretty good to. If you want a small lake for camping i would go to Brewer, lots of fishing docks, decent campground, but no motors on the lake, just trolling motors.

By the sounds of it, there are more options than I thought.

Question about MN.  Do I need to get a second registration on my boat if I go into that state?  What about my trailer, I don't have a trailer license now.  Would I need one to be legal over there?  Obviously, I would need a fishing license for there, but what do I need to look at as far as the boat?

Thanks all!

I agree...my tent sure feels out of place when I camp in the "walmart parking lot" style campgrounds around Sak...which is why I rarely go camping there. We are lucky that ND allows you to camp whereever you want around most state owned lakes. You can't do that in CO or CA...I guess they've determined that too many campers near the water threaten the natural environment too much. There are plenty of places south of Bismarck/Mandan to camp near the Missouri River, including Ft. Lincoln State Park.

A lot of MN places are just as bad as Fort Stevenson...many MN places are seasonal only and there is a waiting list...expect to pay at least twice as much to camp in MN.

here is a link for MEL RIEMAN REC (ND), ND it is  $16.00/ night. However the campsites in the North and South Ravines are some of the nicest in the lake and the RV camping spots are up on the hill a ways away from the south ravine sposts.

Haven't done it for at least twenty years, but with the water up, Beaver Bay, south of Bismarck had great locations for tents.

The COE has been less than helpful with the Beaver Bay campground. Not sure when/if they will have water, electricity, not sure if they will dump/open the cleaning station, etc.

You can't aim a duck to death.
