Come on now fellas....I know some goose hunters have to be having better luck than I am. We have been hunting hard and have only killed 3 geese. I am not a rookie caller or a rookie goose hunter, but no matter what I do, I can hardly get them to turn for me. I think this weekend we are gonna beef up the spread. Seems like the birds want to see more birds in the field. I am only hunting around Minot so they might be a little more pressured. Anybody just flat wearin em out or what??

We havent done to bad this year, seems like they are getting smarter already though!! Our bird count this season is at 45 ( i thought it would be neat to keep track and see what the totals bring at the end of the season)

Wonderful Reagan quote that says it like it is! "It isn't that Liberals are ignorant. It's just that they know so much that isn't so."

As of this mornings hunt we are at an even 100 birds.  Would have been better this morning but had some slobs jump in the same field and were pretty sure they were using electronics.

Shot 50 birds just last weekend! Having no problem at all with birds committing.  Using anywhere from 20 to 60 full bodies depending on number of guys in the spread.  We've been setting up in pretty much a straight line with lots of gaps. Thats pretty though for you guys with a bird count that low, maybe try getting a bit farther outta town??  Also from what i've been seeing even with big groups of birds (a few hundred) they have been hitting different fields from morning to evening.  I hunted a field last friday that was loaded the night before, to not a single brid flying anywhere next morning.   There has been thousands upon thousands of ducks hitting the spread early, can't wait for opener it's gonna be off the hook!!

We have a bunch of land to hunt North of Minot and South of Minot. But we just havent been seein many birds. I have put in a bunch of miles scouting and just looking for birds. We beefed up the spread this afternoon and seen one flock through the bino's that had 200+ birds. So I dont know. Just keep hammerin is all I know to do. I cant wait for duck season either. We got the ducks!

ShepsBirdDogs, it is hard to tell what might be the issue as I am not sure if they are not coming to the field, are not committing to your spread, are flaring, etc. This time of the year it is very common for geese to want to sit a ways away from the big groups. If you are already sitting on the "X" where the birds want to be, then it comes down to your set up, calling etc. Are you flagging or not, how are the birds reacting to it? Are you calling aggressive, moderate, or not at all, and how are they reacting to it?

As said before if you are on the spot where they want to be, then it is a matter of adjusting your spread, calling, and potentially flagging to optimize. I am not saying anything that is rocket science but just keep after them. As others mentioned, keep your spread mostly in family groups with very large openings in the kill zone. I was only out once earlier in August and hammered them and am hoping to get out again soon. More fields have been harvested in comparison to even a few weeks ago so the geese have more options now as well.

Korey,

I have scouted and scouted and scouted. When I think I know exactly where they want to be in the morning and in the evening....They are no where to be seen when we go set up to hunt. I watched a field one night and witnessed a flock of 200+ land in little slough on a cut over wheat field. The next evening they didnt show. I have found numerous holes and fields with LOTS of goose feathers laying around. We both know it takes a heck of a bunch of geese to make a few feathers on a water hole or field. The geese that we have killed, we sat tight in our blinds, never hit a flag or a call. We did have a flock a week ago see our spread, turn, and they shorted us. I only had about 3 dozen decoys out that day. I never hit the call or flag. If I had it to do over I would have blowed my call when I realized they were gonna short us. We have seen a lot of geese at a distance. Most are too far to even call or flag. But I have flagged at some that were way off but close enough that I should be able to get their attention. They dont even acknowledge us. When I call, its all depending on their distance. Still, I cant get them to respond. I have never hunted locals this hard. This is my first year in North Dakota. In Kentucky, we just jumped pot holes during the early season. However, during the migration, we have always stomped them with the techniques and tactics I am using now. Its just tough hunting these local geese and I am not real proficient hunting locals. Just gettin a little discouraged. The spot where I seen 200+ birds, I had watched them in the morning get up around 8am and fly off in groups of 30 or so. I had been watchin them every morning for several days before I set up on an evening hunt. I am about to throw in the towel until the 25th! hahaha!
