Taxidermy pedestal plan's

I am looking at building a pedestal for my turkey that i am having mounted and was wondering if anyone has built something similar to this or has some plans on how to build something, I am open to any ideas and design's.

Get a Van Dykes catalog. You can buy them right from them at an unbelievable rate. Much less than anybody around here would charge and they look very nice! I have seen one and their finish work is pretty good.

That is actually where i got the picture from was there website and they want $250 for it and i don't think i can even make it for that with the supplies but would like to make one myself just to say i did but might end up buying one.

They are way cheaper to buy from van dykes than to make. But they are alittle cheap looking. I had a pedistal made for my deer and made out of solid oak in was $400 and I got a good deal on it since I'm friends with the guy who made it. It is about 4' tall so its pretty big. Here is the only picture I have of it and its not the best pic. The guy lives in Minot that made it and I'm not sure if he does it anymore but can find out if you want.

I would never order anything from Van Dykes, poor quality. Only positive of Van Dykes is it is in SD and shipping is quick. Personally when it comes to mounts I lean towards quality, not trying to save a buck. If it means I have to save for a couple more months to get everything to the best quality it is worth it.

I would guess if you were handy and had the tools you could make one mostly out of a sheet of 3/4" solid core oak veneer plywood and some oak 1x material or trim boards for much less than $250. Just my opinion. I would bet 1 sheet of plywood would cover the sides and top without a problem and it would be 4' tall maximum.

Do a material list and see what you would need, then go price it out. I would use some type of small trim pieces to cover all the exposed joints as I'm sure the veneer will splinter a little when its cut, but otherwise it will look like solid oak when stained.

That is a really nice pedestal wswat and nice deer also, passiton i am going to go to menards or lowes and price out the supplies and see what i can make it for since my dad is pretty good at wood work and it doesn't look like it would be all that difficult to make. I found this one on ebay and i can get it for under $200 shipped and it is oak but you just don't know what you are getting till it is here.

Sometimes you can find a craftsmen on the following site that sells them at a reasonable price. The problem is the shipping cost but can be worth it. I found one on here that was made of old barn siding and it looks great. I think I paid 150 bucks plus shipping for it.

If you have a tablesaw, good miter saw, and clamps you should be able to make one very easily. Need a few woodworking skills obviously but it isn't that hard.

Take a look to see if you have any lumber wholesalers in your area. You can buy oak much cheaper than Lowes or Menards. Good luck!

Time is all you need (along with tools). My dad is a good wood worker but over the years it has become more evident that many times, the effort in time, patience, goof ups, how picky a person is, etc often get out weighed by just finding a reputable place to buy new!

But I totally understand how you'd like to build it yourself and claim it as yours. I considered something similar but I don't have all the tools. That would be an expense in its own and I hate borrowing. I need to buy a house so I can buy tools! Not sure I'd have a bunch of finish type tools though. If I really need to do something my uncle has some pretty good equipment. Didn't I say I hate borrowing?? Ha!

I had one built by a cabinet shop, but it is at the taxidermist right now get the mount set on therefore I don't have any pictures. I should have it back by the end of october and can post a pic then if you would still like. It is an oak pedestal with glass sides and a removable mirror backing. There are also two glass shelves in it. I put my bear skull and a whitetail shed on the shelves inside. Similar to this one:

i strongly disagree. I have ordered from a lot of taxidermy suppliers, and I would rank them in the top. What products are you talking about it? There pedestals?

Here is one that I had made. I can't remember what it cost me but around $00-$500 seems to come to mind. The bottom is loaded with sand so the unit cannot be easily tipped over. The pedestal itself weighs easily over 100# and takes two people to move properly. Sorry it's not a better picture. A guy out of Bismarck built it for me.

I have to agree with NDtaxidermist. I have done taxidermy for over 25 years and have always ordered all my supplies from Van Dykes. Their quality is just fine and so is their price when compared to other companies.

This is the only pic that I have of my elk pedestal mount. This only shows the top of the pedastal. The lower part is basically the same thing. If you want a better pic of the pedestal I can get it tomorrow.
