Tagged/marked pheasant?

I shot this rooster on Saturday and noticed it had this on it's leg. Just wondering if anyone knows what it's for?I am guessing it was a farm raised bird as it didn't have anything else attached to it.
The kill is the satisfying, indeed essential, conclusion to a successful hunt. But, I take no pleasure in the act itself. One does not hunt in order to kill, but kills in order to have hunted. Then why do I hunt? I hunt for the same reason my well-fed cat hunts...because I must, because it is in the blood, because I am the decendent of a thousand generations of hunters. Did it have a decent tail?  A lot of times a farm raised bird gets its tail feathers pecked off if it is not a dominate bird.  Especially if they spend time in the pen before being released.

Probably a 19-20" average tail for this time of year.

Ha, guess I knew that much, but thanks for confirming it!

Where'd you kill it Todd?  Probably an escapee from a dog trial.   Lots of trials held every year out your way and east.    That one must have made it for a few months anyway - most of them die pretty quickly once they are released and don't find food and water in plastic containers!    They rarely make the winter.
Often find chukars in a dog trial area, too.  They do a bit better than pen raised pheasants, and only reproduce once in a while.  Saw a couple a few weeks ago.

Shot it down by Linton hunting with Dirty on his land. The bird sure seemed to be in good shape and was with a bunch of other birds as they usually are this time of year.

That is a home ankle monitoring bracelet.  That poor pheasant was on parole and you gave it the death penalty.

I'll bet Savage is right!!   You murderer!
Don't know of any dog trials down there.  Any game farms close by?
It used to be  if you release pheasants, in order to shoot them out of season or exceed bag limits or dog training you are/were supposed to "mark them" by banding them, clipping a toenail or even putting red ribbons on a leg for dog trials or things like that.  Supposed to prevent innocent taking of wild pheasants, though other than the red leg ribbons I never understood how!?!
That's what the law used to be but I'm not sure if it is still like that now or not.

Maybe it's one of the pheasants they tagged for the South Dakota hunting promotion deal where you can win money? Linton isn't that far away from SD. Might wanna check into that

If that's the case I'm going to grab my bag of zip ties and head pheasant hunting quick. Get myself some Christmas spending money...

Interesting but I would guess there's no promotion involved. Probably a raised bird or marked at some point but for contests and such they don't just slap a zip tie on 'em.

Not pen raised, but raised under the hood of a '78 Ford.  A mechanic saw it's leg, thought it was the speedometer cable, and zip-tied it to keep it out of the fanbelt!

I'm guessing its the million dollar bird and the tag that says so fell off. That would suck.

Spaniel guys usually use pheasants but also Chuckar if not available.  A lot of guys train with quail.

Just because it is a CHINESE Ringneck, no reason to use the derogatory ZIP tie term. You can call it a Cable Tie/Wire Tie/Plastic Tie. Or even just a pheasant tie.

It's not that bad.
