I believe most of those "northerns" might be the tiger muskies that were stocked in there, although I have heard some reports of feral northerns from time to time. The tiger muskies are considered a tropy fish (as in you are darn lucky to get one) and have a size limit restriction, so be sure of what you keep. There was a fish kill a year or two ago. My fishing report is that I haven't had time to fish lately.

I havnt been to Sweet Briar in about 3 years so decided to try Saturday night around dusk. The lake is not like it use to be....Normally around dusk when the wind settles down and the lake is calm you were able to see fish feeding all over the lake, not so now, i saw a few larger splashes and some small ones along the shore but not like it was last time I was there. I caught a small northern and a small large mouth. 3 years ago i would always catch a good number of crappie, walleye, bluegill etc.. Does anyone know if this lake had a winter kill or something? There was fish, just not as many as I remember. All in all it was a nice night, saw some deer, pheasants and a porcupine.

Sweet Briar Dam - Thursday, September 10, 2009
Just moved to Bismarck about 2 months ago and got the boat out and fished Sweetbriar for the first time today. I actually had quite a bit of action between the perch, northerns, and occasional walleye. I fished for about 3 hours and caught 5 northerns, 7 or 8 perch, and 2 walleyes. One northern was 5.5#, 2 of the perch were about 9 inches and the rest smaller, 1 walleye was about 10 inches and the other one 16".
Started out fishing 2 rods, one with a jig and minnow, and the other rod with a lindy and minnow. I was catching the northerns on the jig and the perch on the lindy. Then I put on some bottom bouncers and spinners and started trolling. One rod had a hammered silver and minnow, the other rod a hammered brass and minnow. The perch stole a lot of my minnows and so I put stinger hooks on and then started hooking a few more of the perch. Caught both the walleyes on spinners. Fished mostly in the 10-14 foot range. The water has a fair amount of algae/green gunk on the top of the water but it didnt really affect my fishing much. I didn't ever really have algae or moss or anything on my hooks. All in all it wasn't too bad a day of fishing since I was only out a couple hours and had never fished there before. I'm looking forward to the fall! |

Sweet Briar Dam - Wednesday, July 22, 2009
Stopped by my old haunts at Sweetbriar on my way back to town from work this evening. BeeUtiful evening. LOTS of weeds/algae as expected. I did try a couple spots on the main lake where NDF&F dredged out the shoreline deeper to keep weeds away and make fishing water accessable from shore. Bluegill were rising but no flyrod tonight, I pitched a floating rap in wounded minnow fashion. Tried up in the creek as well, had one good bass hit and a bluegill peck at it...nothing hooked. Saw several bass rise, lots of birds/wildlife as usual. Only found 8 ticks on me. Canoe, waders or boat fishing looks to be the best bet but there are enough spots along shore to just sit and use bobbers. Picked up 20 aluminum cans (20 cents worth!), several diapers and a bagful of other crapola, so its ready to go for the next campers.
