Student suspended for leaving hunting bow in truck

The Associated Press - Friday, October 03, 2008
MILACA, Minn.

A Milaca High School senior is on suspension after leaving his hunting bow in his SUV that was parked at school.

Keith Larson has missed a week and a half of school and can't return to class until Wednesday.

Larson said had been on a hunting trip a few days before the morning he drove to school with his bow and arrow set still sitting in the back of his SUV. He said it was covered up, just sitting in the back end.

"I didn't plan nothing to use it. I just forgot it in the back of my vehicle," he said.

Larson said he reported it to his teacher in his first class as soon as he remembered he had the bow. But she didn't report the bow to administrators right away, he said.

"And then halfway through the last hour of the day the principal came and called me down, and came and took it out of my vehicle, and told me I was getting suspended and possibly expelled," Larson recalled.

Principal Troy Anderson said the school has a strict, zero-tolerance policy, and students know they can't bring weapons to school.

"Our kids at Milaca High School should know what the expectations are," Anderson said. "In my mind is a bow a weapon? In my mind, it is."

The principal would not talk about specifics of the case, but said Larson won't be expelled.

Larson is a football player and captain of the wrestling team, and is nominated to be homecoming king. He said he feels he's been treated harshly, especially since he told his teacher about the bow.

Zero-tolerance policies on weapons are common. Last week, the Anoka-Hennepin School Board voted to put a 17-year-old Blaine High School senior on probation for having a box cutter in his car. Tony Richard will be on probation until the end of the first quarter. Any infractions in the meantime could result in expulsion.

Wow! Now I'll admit I don't know the whole story, but this seems to be a bit over the top, but I hope the guy went bow hunting on his unplanned vacation. I would.

Good lord! They'd have called the SWAT team for my car in high school. A shotgun, a rifle and lots of ammo for both was SOP. My everpresent pocket-knife would apparently cause coniption fits as well now.

Is this really a surprise to anyone? It sucks that it has come to this but like they say everyone pays for mistakes of a few.

It is a different story if a kid goes to school with a gun or bow in his car in the middle of LA but in small town ND or MN... they use it for hunting and it is part of our culture. I never went a day in high school that I did not have a gun of some sort in my truck.

Horsager, it sounds like it wouldn't have done them any good. You could have held'em off for awhile anyway. Yeah, my car looked the same as yours in HS. Mine had red streaks, feathers, hair, and other items of interest in the back to boot. Would have probably given the principal a heart attack.

I hear you guys. Me and a few of my buddies would have the shotguns in the car and leave school to go pheasant hunting right after we got out. I also carried a jack knife to school every day even though it would have gotten me in trouble then. I guess that is the price you pay for a dozen idiots who couldn't get in touch with their feelings and go midevil at their school!

That is nothing. Five years ago, my son who was 16 at the time, was expelled because he had an Exacto knife in his backpack for a project he was working on in school. He also lived in Minnesota. Needless to say, he went on to a different school after the expulsion and graduated.

Here's a question.... What do they do with the equipment used to discect things in science class? We had scalples and scissors and all kinds of apparently really dangerous objects when I was in HS. Are we down to plastic scissors and chopsticks for teaching aids? No wonder the kids are having trouble. The adults are SUPPOSED to be smarter.

I'm with you guys on this one. I set up my schedule my junior and senior years to have study hall right away in the morning, that way I could go hunting before school. I think it was a mistake, and the kid admitted it. Send him home, and let him get rid of it, not suspend him for it.

I remember having the principal call me to the office and tell me that guns couldn't be in the back window of the truck anymore, so he said to put them behind the seat. That was that. A dozen people ruined a good thing for millions. Sad deal.

If it flies it dies!

Ahhhhh....the good old days when you had two guns in the gun rack in the window of your pickup and enough shells to go to war.

This is the bigest crock of BS. Just like all of you during hunting season i was loaded for bear. before and after school i would hunt when i could and i couldnt of cared less if there were guns in my car or not. hell i bought a rem 870 off a kid for 100 so he could buy beer for the weekend in the school parking lot (which i let him buy it back for 150 cuz i cleaned it lol). i live in fargo and have no desired to ever raise a kid in this town. small town living might be boring but hell it sure beats getting searched before you can get in the school doors. just imo

What a bunch of crap. Maybe a bunch of us should e-mail or letter write the powers that be! I'm for no weapons in school in this day and age , but this is silly!

We were probably 12-13 years old and carrying our bows on the bus for gym class. Later on, I was in the same boat as Horsager except they would have call a bombsquad. Whenever someone would run out of ammo, we would just dig under the seat a little deeper.

When was the last time a kid shot up a bunch of people at a school with a bow? How about knifed a bunch of people with a box cutter? What's next, you could stab someone with a No. 2 pencil, might want to suspend everyone with one of those too!

These zero tolerance policies are stupid!

That reminds me. One of the miscreants I had shop class with would put welding rods in the end of the blow gun on the air hose and shoot them across the shop. They had enough force at 15-20 to puncture the metal siding. Eventually he ended up in prison. Not a surprise to anyone.

I understand the zero tolerance policy. But the punishment is way over the top especially since the kid told someone about it. I say give the kid a 45 minute after school detention, tell him he did wrong and send him home to take it out of his vehicle. End of story.

I agree with you huntnfishnd. A No. 2 pencil is every bit as dangerous as a knife. I do remember the good ole days when I used to drive to school with my shotgun in my back window and enough ammo on the back seat to start and finish WW III. Then Columbine happened and since I grew up with the principles kid he told me just make sure its under my back seat.

Told a buddy about this down here and he said all they had to do in Tennessee is bring there shotguns/rifles into the pricipals office before school so he could lock them in one of the three gun safes in his office. That's a new one on me. Turns out the principal taught the firearm safety course after classes too. Not a bad idea if you ask me.

A bow in the truck is just that, a bow in the truck, suspension = ridicules, adults should know better and should be able to make commonsense judgement calls when it comes to these situations. It sounds like commonsense was nowhere to be found by adults in this situation. If I were a faculty member in that school, I would put my job on the line to prevent something like this from happening. Have some balls and stand up for our young people that you know are good and have no ill intentions. Thank you
