I am needing a new rifle scope for my mountain rifle. Trying to decide between the Zeiss 4.5-14-44 Rapid Z 800 reticle or the Leupold 4.5-14x40 CDS.

The leupold is 3.5 oz lighter but has smaller obj diameter. Zeiss is heavier but supposedly cleaner glass with bigger field of view.

Whats the way to go? Anybody have experience with either of these scopes and how did you like them. I will be mounting it on a 30-06 caliber.

This is my BOOMSTICK!!!

I have the 4.5-14-44 Rapid Z 800 on my STW, its a nice scope.Like yourself there were a couple others I liked as well, but in the end the deal I got through camera land is what made the deal for me.

I prefer turrets to christmas trees.  Everything on a Zeiss is backwards.  The turrets spin opposite and the power ring turns opposite to almost everything else.  I don't like how Z's turrets are labeled either.  I'd much prefer a CDS with M-1 labeling.

On the flip-side, there is no doubt that the view through the Z is superior.  The Z is brighter and resolves detail noticeably better than the L.

Why yes indeed I can walk on water..............but I do stagger on alcohol.

On a true no frills lightweight rig my preference is Leupold's fixed 6x42.  A CDS with M-1 designators on the ele would frost the cake for me.

I took my leupold off of my stw and put a vortex on it and I love it. I would go with the zeiss. My buddy and brother put the cds scopes on there guns last summer and they are ok, but I think u would be happier with the zeiss.

In this particular instance....Leupold hands down.

But you can't go wrong either way.

What distances do you want to be shooting with this setup? If you plan on only shooting out to 300-400 yards the CDS is not needed. Might as well go with the Zeiss for better glass in low light conditions.

Are you planning on using the turrets on leupold? If so remember garbage in, garbage out. When sending info in for the turrets try and get verified drops. Either scope should work out great. They both just are slightly different setups.
