the wife brought up the idea of switching to Straight Talk from Verizon.
i really like Verizon, but our bill is pretty high.
2 smart phones and wireless internet for at home with insurance on each runs us about 230 a month.

does anybody have Straight Talk and like it? from what i hear the quality of smart phones they have aren't the greatest.

also, i don't live in the Metropolis, so it has to function everywhere that my Verizon phone does.

any input is appreciated.

If you buy in ND, and activate it on ND phone number, it will have the exact same access as postpaid Verizon phones.

You won't have a great selection of phones though.....

funny... thinking bout the same thing.  sat on hold iwith STs customer service yesterday for 45 minutes before i my phone went dead waiting for an answer on whether or not i could use my verizon based htc thunderbold for ST.  note to self... don't expect stellar customer service if you make the switch!

Just switched to Sraight talk 1-14-13 haven't had a problem,  No much for phone selection went with the samsung proclaim now cell bill is just under $49.00 with taxes.  Only get 3 G speed but seems to work as good as before.  I like the unlimited data fee now I can surf the web, listen to xm radio without getting an email telling me my data time is running out.  Best part if I don't seem to like it can get out, no contract,  if I continue to like phone service wife is also going to switch once her contract is up.  One bonus for $15,00 one time charge you can insure the phone covers everthing except lost or stolen, it cost  $5.00 per month to insure my son phone through ATT.

Maybe they've gotten better but a few years ago I looked at them and they seemed like the phones were cheesy as all heck. Internet was nothing compared to Verizon etc. They have the price down, now if they could come up with some decent phones.

i have a Galaxy Nexus right now, which is one of the best ones you can get through verizon. its the first phone i haven't wanted to throw out the window, not even once.
i hate the idea of having to downgrade phones just to save a few bucks.
i pay 7 bucks a month for insurance on this one. luckily i haven't had to use it.
i went through 7 blackberry's in 2 years. really glad i had the insurance then.

The way I understand it is you have to have one of the following a LG optimus Zip or Samsung Galaxy Proclaim to use the verizon network, otherwise on any other phone and you would be on AT&T network, which sucks if you are not within 10-15 miles of I94 or I29 in ND.

Verizon is the top dog in North Dakota no question. I work in the industry and have for 8+ years. Is Straight Talk cheaper? Absolutely it is. Is it a better service? No way!! There is no way something that cost's half as much and uses other carriers tower networks can compete on quality of service. The way the tower network is setup is simple and easy to understand. The towers are set up like a totem poles. For example if you are a Verizon post pay customer you are at the top of the totem pole you have priority over any other carrier AT&T, Sprint etc. Of course whichever carrier owns the tower they have initial priority. Any way at the bottom of the totem pole is pre-pay customers. Is there a market for them? Yes, people that don't have any expecations for service and don't use their phone for more than making a phone call while in a metropolitan area they are fine. But people that use their phones for everything from calls, email, hot spot, web browsing, streaming music and video. You need a product like Verizon that can do all of this efficiently. My office is in Stanley,ND and I see upset Straight Talk customers all the time. When they leave they are carrying a Verizon phone and talking/texting on it. A little long winded I know, but I wanted to get the information out.   You can't compare Verizon and Straight Talk. Similar to comparing a Corvette to a Geo.

Ha..Ha..Ha this is such salesman talk it makes me laugh

If you want a phone to be a phone straight talk works…if you want a high end phone to do a whole bunch of internet crap…then you need to pay for it…there is no magic inbetween…yet…

Of course someone from Verizon is going to say it is junk. HA HA! I know people that are on strait talk and absolutely love it. I am going to be switching next month when my contract is up. As long as you get a good phone there should be no issues. They use some of the same phones as Verizon. The people I know have zero problems with reception on strait talk.

I have had st talk for 2 years. no problems at all.  My phone runs on the Verizon towers.  My on has the smart phone from them.  If you get the smart phone you have to be sure you get the ones that go on verizon.   I would switch again in a heartbeat!!

I have ST with a Samsung proclaim phone.  My wife has Verizon on some sort of Droid phone that's about 1.5 years old.  Her service is better than mine in the same areas.  Also if you do out of state travel the ST service is very sketchy if you aren't by interstate or in bigger cities.  When I was hunting in MT this fall all the people with me that had Verizon could make calls from camp and my ST phone was no service the whole time.  I think there is a way to switch your home area or something that might improve that, but I'm too lazy to do it when I know other people will have phones that I can use to check in at home with every once in a while.  I'm pretty happy with ST service area at home, and I'm cheap so it works for me!

Phones are alot cheaper @ walmart for verizon. Wifes phone cost $118.00 @ verizon and .79 cents @ walmart. We are renewing after 2 years. We have 1 smart phone & 4 regular phones on our plan. Cost is about 198.00 per month. Live out in the contry- Fair service.

It's hard to say verizon and att get signals better.  At work we have guys sitting besides each other one will have good signal and texting the other guy has none.  I was with att switched to straight talk haven't had any issues at work yet.  The ability to send or recieve calls comes downt to the phone quality more than service provider.
