I'm looking for advice, and figured a lot of people on here would have experience with keeping deer from eating younger trees . . . any advice, techniques, and ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Nick

Tie up a mountain lion to the base of the tree.

I was banking on a bow or firearm being the 1st suggestion.

Perhaps ND G&F will run their MT Lion trailer over to MN and bring our lost cat back for ya!

Why yes indeed I can walk on water..............but I do stagger on alcohol.

Go to your local barber - beauty shop and have them save you a gallon zip lock bag of hair and sprinkle it around the  base of the trees every so often, works for me. Unless you have a lot of trees and depends how "Rural" you are and can get power to them a motion sensor hooked to lights and a radio.( you or your neighbors don't want lights and a radio coming on at all hours of the night)

We always hit a radio under a 5 gallon bucket tuned into KFYR to keep all critters out of what we didn't want them in. You can try peeing on each tree.

Make your own deer repellent.

get cheap eggs from walmart; 5 doz

put eggs without shells into 5 gallon pail and cover, let them spoil for two weeks, become putrid.

get 4 each of 3 1/2 oz., cheap containers of cayn. or red pepper and  garlic at walmart.

Mix spice into putrid eggs and add water and spray with weed sprayer.  Or you can buy deer away for twenty times the cost.

It works great!  I used it on all of my plum, apple and choke cherry tree rows at the lake!

i had troubles with deer eating/rubbing my new apple trees. i bought some irish spring soap and cut them in half and drilled a small hole through each piece and hung them by wire on each tree last fall. i just checked them the other day and they were untouched and i had about 80 deer this winter
the more food you have in your mouth, the better you can taste it !!

I put a ring of hog fence around each tree with about 2 feet of clearance between the fence and the tree.  The hog fence is 4 ft tall, which allows the deer to prune the branches that grow through the fence, but leave the trunk and growing tip alone.  It has worked real well with the 100 or so apple, pear, and plum trees we've planted over the last 5 years.  The rodents have taken a few and of course the weather have taken about 15 or so.  Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice . . . I actually posted this for my future father-in-law. He lives down in NE and recently moved into the country, where he's had trouble with the deer eating the bark and leaves off his young trees. Thanks again for the ideas.
