I just saw a picture of a new state record catfish on fox news tonight.  It was 42 lbs and some change and caught at moon lake by valley city.  Anyone have any info on it?

Wow you beat me to the post I actually had to rewind it and list to it again...I have fished moon lake there is no way there are catfish in it.  It's basically a giant bowl that gets down to about 45ft. no inlet or outlet.

Obviously the fish was caught somewhere...just not at moon

I saw the news report too.  Wondered about Moon, but it does get deep.  I guess I can believe it, but am surprised.

YES, I am that foolish!

I can believe this story. I remember my dad telling me about a catfish that washed up dead on a lake in SE ND when he was a kid. There wasn't supposed to be catfish in that lake and they claimed it would have been close to the state record.

I've heard on many different occasions of there being huge cats in Moon.  I grew up in VC and never seen one.  Looks like the rumors are true!  Its really deep so they have plenty of room to lay low and hit the cool water.  Congrats!  That's the only cat I've heard caught in like the last 10 years (time I've been paying attention to moon).

NDGF confirmed the catch.

Geez, kinda making you Red River guys look bad ain't it?  Suppose the spring flooding put that big ole cat in the Moon?  Definitely not a place I would be seeking a state record fish.  Congrats to the angler!

I thought my friend was pulling my leg this morning when he called and told me the record was broken and it was over 40 pounds. I can't believe it. It's a sad day in the catfishing world.

Fargo Angler Shatters Fish Record
Tina Willis’s catch on July 25 shattered a state record that hadn’t been touched in 18 years.

The Fargo angler reeled in a 42-pound, 1-ounce channel catfish from Moon Lake while using a frog on a 30 pound test line.

The 40-inch fish broke the old record by nearly nine pounds. The previous record of 33 pounds, 4 ounces was taken from the Red River in 1991.

Moon Lake is located southwest of Valley City in Barnes County.

Gene Van Eeckhout, southeast district fisheries supervisor for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department in Jamestown, said catfish were first introduced in Moon Lake in 1986, and then each year from 1989-93.

“The fish could be anywhere from 16-23 years old,” Van Eeckhout said.

Or maybe a guy should go fish Moon Lake for cats!!!!

I honestly can't believe it either.  Obviously, the angler was trying for the cat with the setup.  They must have watched Grumpy Old Men motivating them to go after Catfish Hunter!!!!

Man, I was going to go fish moon (not for catfish), but choose clausen springs instead.

Congrats on the great fish!! Moon lake may have a few other gaints in its depths, I recorded 94ft on the depth finder last year.

There is no limit on a Good Time!!

I had reports of them being seen on camera, and even some 20+ pounders being caught.  I fished the lake for other species a lot from '01-06 and never hooked one on accident, but knew people who had targeted them specifically and caught them occasionally.

The fish came from Moon, no doubt, and is probably one of those stockers from waaaaay back.  That fish is scary looking, even for a channel cat.

Heh.  Moon doesn't get down past 45 feet or so.  You better check your sonar Goosefish!

that is crazy. It would be interesting to know if they have caught quite a few cats there before or why they were fishing for them.

Maybe he meant 49 ft.

Ok...I'm a believer I heard Doug Leir on KFGO this morning confirming that years ago, Moon was stocked with cats to clean up the bottom. If I'd have know that when I fished it could of targeted those pigs would've been fun I can't imagine there's many of them in there though.

Thought I would show you guys a pic shortly after she caught it taken at my dad's farm close by.  This fish was just a pig.  It took quite a few different spots before we found them again.  I have been trying to find these fish for the last 9 years since 2000 when I caught my first one...no success 2001-03.  No one really believed me back then that I caught one.  I told Tina that day as we launched the first cat pole that once your bait alert goes it should be the state record.  When mine went first I was suprised, that one was a 16lb male.  As soon as we got that one back in the water, her bait alert just started screaming.  She set the hook and the end of her pole almost touched the water.  Just great to see!

We had fished the Red River here in Fargo and north of Fargo many many times for the last 3 years.  Definately not as easy as it sounds to get a big fish landed.  She has caught several over 20lbs and her biggest, before this one, was 29.

She has definately got the lucky catpole everytime we go out, scary thing is...we both got buck tags this year ;)

Awesome Toby and Tina!  I really appreciate the story and photo.  Just a piggy.  Wow, congrats!

P.S.  How long is it?

This fish is exactly 40" long.  The girth is incredible as well as the size of it's head.  In the picture I have it cradled in my arm...takes up the whole forearm and then some.
