Spring Northern Pike Lake Oahe

I haven't made the trip to Oahe for spring Pike fishing in 12 years.
Two questions.
Is the spring pike fishing still as good as it once was? Is it still worth the trip? I'm thinking about bringing my 12 yr old girl this time. I'm hoping to create same wonderful memories with her.
Question two. Seems to me April 1st was usually the target date I aimed for in the past. What are the current ice conditions? I would like some ice on main lake but need open coves to fish in.
Thanks for your help!

I usually make to trip to the Little Bend area but depending on ice and weather conditions sometimes fish closer to Piere where a person can find a spot to fish while sitting in the vehicle. Let me know if you hear something about ice conditions. Thanks

Forrest,

The ice conditions have deterriorated dramatically around the Whitlock Bay area. The water has come up quite a bit and the shore lines are open for fishing in some areas. Last spring the Northern fishing was not very good. Hopefully it will pick up this year and produce some large fish.

They have been Pike fishing for about a week in the Pierre area. Today was the first confirmed catches that I know of. The lake is still mostly covered in Ice, and you will have to fish prevailing winds for a time. The fish that were caught today were in the 12-14# range.  My opinion is that these are mature(and some of the bigger) females in the system right now. It will be 4-or 5 years until we realize trophy Pike fishing again; and while I'm sure that there are a couple of "DINOSAURS" still swimming out there, the calendar and the moon phase lead me to believe that by Easter; the run will be done.  The good news is that there is a population of younger fish that are capable of spawning; and if water conditions remain, there will be two year classes of "Hammer-Handles".

One step at a time...Be careful.

Thank you PikePits and others who have responded. I've decided to take my three girls and head for the lake on Tuesday. We'll almost certainly catch more fish at the lake then sitting at home. lol Besides I think Pierre is a very beautiful place and the kids will love the new experience. If I find Wi-Fi at the hotel I'll keep you all posted. If you everf find your way to Duluth, MN drop me a note. Thanks again.

Lots of ice on oahe yet.  If you can find some open areas the pike are hitting.  Caught 2 pike on 3-28 15.5lbs and a 22.5 lb.  Been hearing they are catching a lot of walleye below the dam on lake Sharpe.  You cannot get a boat on oahe yet.  Shore fishing only on  oahe by Pierre.  Boat fishing is good below the dam.

Oahe is not open enough for boats yet by Pierre.  Below the dam on Sharpe is good for Walleye right now but it is turning into combat fishing and bumper boats.

It doesnt matter that I say anything.   I live here and it is like this all the time.  It is not a secret.  At any given time of the year on any given day it is combat fishing.  If you lived here you would know that.  This is just meant to give people an idea of what to expect when they get here.

Thanks WalleyPike. I appreciate the information. I know this too, and I don't even live there. (but then again, we're ruining it for everyone?)

Also.....notice all of the fishing reports from ft. thompson and lake sharpe just flying in on the fishing report webpage of this site.  Wait a second....no one has posted anything since February and its now almost April!  I guess word of mouth might have had something to do with it too instead of just a fishing report page.  But damn you Sdoinsider!  You ruined fishing for everyone.  Might as well hang it up for this year and wait for it to freeze over again.

I'm driving a long way to get a crack at ice out pike. (They don't allow that in my state) I never keep any fish. I just come for the experience and this year I want my kids to enjoy this unique fishing opportunity also. If it wasn't for fellow sportsmen giving me an update on ice conditions I probably wouldn't make the trip. I for one very much appreciate all the reports. This is not a "How to rape the resource" forum. I'm not looking to crowd anyone out of their spot and usually find an out of the way area to fish. When I'm gone no one knows I was ever there. Last I looked we all live in the same country! I only say all this because I know there are many others like me reading these postings. Sorry, someone above hit a nerve!

90% of the ice went off of Oahe today just above the dam. I saw several boats venturing out but not sure what landing they used. Still ice covered in the Little Bend area.
We've been fishing the backs of several coves that are ice free but haven't had any pike action yet however we sure have had catfish action! Does anyone have any thoughts about that? If I'm catching cats is that good or bad? I mean do the cats come in first or does that mean the pike already spawned? Kids love the action but so far the pike fishing isn't like i remembered a few years ago.

Ice is completely off all the way north to the Little Bend area. South side of Little Bend is ice free, North side is ice covered as of this evening. We spent the entire day today fishing Corp Bay with out a bite. Watched dozens of others with the same fate as us. The cloudy east wind probably didn't help warm the water up any. My thought is the best fishing is still to come along with the next warm front. Still all in all a good day to be out fishing. Saw lots of wildlife and I don't mean my kids. I did learn a valuable lesson today. Don't eat at the China Buffet in Pierre. YUCK!.I would have had a better meal eating the smelt I've been fishing with. So far for the trip we caught 17 channel cats and one northern pike. Not the best year for me but when you see the smile on the face of my 10 yr old girl straining to hold that pike it was probably worth the trip. Thanks to everyone for the updates. We'll try again in a few years. Homeward bound!
