spinning reel repair

I've been housecleaning and tossing stuff out (OK, my name is Bob and I'm a packrat!)  and found I had several spinning reels that I tossed in a box to try to fix once I get one of those round things.  A Round Tuit!
I think the commonest reel problem is failure of the bail to flip over when going from cast to retrieve.    What causes this problem?   If you clean and lube them up well, some of them work, but some don't.
Any suggestions of how to fix them?  Is the bail bent or something, or is there any magic fix that anyone has found.
There used to be a couple of older guys who repaired reels and they always seemed to fix the bail problem easily and quickly,  and  both told me that was the easiest problem to fix, but at the time I was never curious enough to get the fix details.
Anyone have the magic answer?

Dakota Tackle used to be a drop-off point for one of the reel repair guys.  I'd pay someone to get it done so you can enjoy them instead of look @ the box full of stuff that doesn't work while you wonder/cypher "how too?"

Bobkat-

I am looking for a couple of decent spinning reels for the kids. I won some rods at the Wolves Tourney and need some lightweight reels for them.

It's gonna cost you EXTRA!!  Bettin' you'll have to fund them via "Sweat Equity".

Used to bring them down to the fellow at Siox Sporting Goods - he went on to the Walleye hole in the sky!
Then used the fellow at Dakota Tackle but he also went to the Walleye hole in the sky!
Nobody fixes them here in Bis that I know of.

same thing happened here. The guy that fixed reels (he was very good at it and cheap) drowned on Lynn Lake last fall after the boat capsized when hitting a sunken tree. A bad deal all around.

Well then, I hope they are jigging/riggin/casting with the most finely tuned reels in heaven.

Bob, I will take a look at them if you like. I am still using a reel that Allen called my "pencil sharpener" after about 6 years. The cause can be dependent on the make/model of reel.

And if SDWXMAN  is in town and wants to get together for a fishing excursion or beverage, let me know.

I spent yesterday am taking them apart, cleaning and lubing them and now they all work but one which works but is a bit slow to flip the bail.
I found out there is a guy who comes down from Minot to Dakota Tackle and picks up reels, fixes them, and drops them back.
Thanks Steve.

I've spent so little time on the water this year that I've been looking out the window all morning and am seriously contemplating dunking the boat.

Give me a holler if you have a few spare minutes this evening and we can go out for a brew.

Allen-

That might work. I have your number. Give Steve a call as well, and I will see what Simms is up to. I noticed the wind chill was 37 when I got up. Brrrr. Might hold out until tomorrow. You gonna go? I might be talked into it for later this afternoon if the rain holds off.
