How are the ice conditions? Is there still open water? I've never fished here but would like to get out after some pike and I'm not sure which areas to avoid or be cautious of.

Well spent the past two days fishing part of the day on the lake. First day we came in on the west side. Pressure ridge to the north of where the old road bed is. We fished south of the road bed in 6-8 ft of water using smelt and minnows. Bite on Sat was slow but did manage to get four nice pike on the ice. We left when the rain started so our time was short. Ice varied from 9-12" but was clear and solid where we where at.
Sunday in the wind we decided to come in from the east. Fished north of the road and pressure ridge. Ice varied a good deal more from less than 7" in a few spots to over 12" Lots and lots of water and open area on the lake from the interstate south! The open areas will make me pause in driving on this lake even later with a pickup! Smelt where the preferred bait with only one hit coming on minnows over the two days. If you go, please be careful as the colder temps can easily freeze over an area and blowing snow obligerate any sign of it being open. Stay along the shore line on the east side up to where the pastures split. This area is where the springs start. Coming in from the west I would stay south of the old road bed period. With open water right back up to shore at the end of the pressure ridge, I do not see any way to safely get up along the west shore. Going across the lake from east to west or west to east was not an option that I could see! |

Ice is not very good....i was by there last week and the whole middle of the lake was open. Pike are in there and also some perch probly not as good of a pike bite as the past years.

Has anyone fished here lately? I'm looking to get some pike for the smoker. Used to be a good spot, but haven't been out there for about 4 years.

Fished all afternoon and didn't get one bite on the tip ups. Eckelson is a dead sea.
