Smishek Lake - Thursday, May 17, 2012 | |
Hello All,
Great site here. My family lives back in Dakota and I will be back for a few day over 4th of July. I currently live in California and typically only fish for LMB and ocean fish. I will be staying near Smishek lake and would love to get into some walleye or pike while I am back there. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for this lake that they wouldn't mind sharing (bait/presentation/locations). I will likely have my kids with and fish from a boat so any help would be much appreciated. Sorry, this is not much of a fishing report but I didn't know where else to post. Thanks, Erik |

fished anywhere from 5-12 FoW. caught 6 perch that were border line keeper so i released them. caught 5 northerns, all small. caught most of the perch on small puppet minnows with just a minnow head hanging off the treble hook. did manage to catch a couple of them on a swedish pimple. ice was very good, about 18-20 inches thick.

i fished there yesterday with alot of success limited out on northerns, caught a few big perch, let 20+ small ones go , caught my first walleye out of there i could see them swimming down below for a couple weeks but could never interest them.biggest northern was 7 lbs and the smallest at 2.5 lbs. the walleye was 2lb 1 oz. the perch were 9 to 12 ozs. i seen some really big blue gills swimming and only the small ones seemed interested but were quickly scared away by northerns or bigger perch. the hooks i used were the chubby firetiger with minnow hooked through the tail and the chubby darter roach color hooked the same way. the perch and walleye favored those two. i tried a couple different colored geenz worms /with a wax worm on it for the bluegill but they just looked at it or sucked the wrong end of the hook in.i have seen the fish are starting to bite more all the time and more aggressive too.the next week should be alot better than it has been too.not seeing alot of people out fishing.if someone isnt sure where to go my fish house is silver tin located on the point, anyone who wants to fish there or right next to it is more than welcome too,the fish in that spot seem to come from the north east direction and always run east when hooked.well gotta go get more lures from scheels today dropped my firetigers down the hole last night by mistake whengetting ready to leave.

fished the dam again .had alot of fun today.took two perch and one northern home today.the biggest perch was almost 12 inches the other was nine.the northern was three pounds. the perch were caught on the fire tiger chubby darter with a very lively minnow hooked through the tail. the northern was caught on a gold colored puppet rapala with a minnow hooked through the tail. i had three trophy size northerns under my ice house any where from 12 to 20 lbs swimming around but would not bite on anything i put too them.and a few smaller northerns too, in total there were nine of them down there in one area. i started the day by lowering my darters down and i got too see there was a small school of what appeared to be bluegills not big ones.they swam away as my darter scared them, when they took off they al look kinda silver looking(i assumed it was bluegill but cant be certain.)i jigged for a little bit and got my first perch on it was the small one .then i lowered the darter again and seen a couple fish that came swimming slowly to it, looked at it for awhile but didnt do any thing so i raised it up ,they followed the bait, then they turned and swam away, those two were walleyes, one of my neighbors confirmed there were walleye in there i didnt know there were so i wasn't hoping they were at that point.an hour went by before my next bite and that was the second perch , this one was really dark looking compared to the other, and when i was watching him down the ice hole he looked like he was alot bigger than he was too.really got my heart racing . my northern came about an hour after that he hit the puppet rapala just as i was getting ready to pull the lines up and go home for the night.he was really fiesty too!even though i didnt get many at least it was something just wished the fishing would get alot better than just a couple fish a day. well i am hoping tommorow will be nice and warm i'm going to go try a spot way out of the way and is going to take the fourwheeler to get there have to cross acouple springs and dont know how thick the ice is there but i do know im not taking the pickup up there!

yesterday was the first time i have caught a bluegill through the ice . i Can not believe how hard they fight and when they strike ,wow! i had alot of fun for the short time i was there.only caught six .the biggest was 8 inches & dont know if thats a big one or not but they sure are plump too, i should have kept them but i returned them to the lake .origianally i was looking for perch and stumbled onto the bluegill. when i first got there i lost my depth weight and had to use a black and white fishing spoon to check the depth and when i lowered it i got a 2 lb northern right away, never thought you could jig a spoon for trolling but strange things happen from time to time. the acess is pretty good the snow is very hard now and was able to drive on top and over the larger snow drifts . the snow looks deeper than it is also.but you will still need a four wheel drive to get around though.

went fishing smishek lake today caught a few small perch and one small northern.bites were light but when they did bite they took the line out for a ways. on one bobber and minnow rig they would take the bobber under the ice about a foot.pretty good for perch.only had one large fish on but wasnt able to set te hook on that one.i drove on the ice thinking it was thicker than what it was asoon as i seen my tire tracks filling with water in my mirror i got off the ice.the snow is heavy and i think i drove by a spring that may have been seaping water on the top of the ice? i drilled holes where i drove and there wasnt too thick of ice in that area and there was about two to three inches of water above the holes i drilled.caught a few perch nine in total i didnt keep any just to small to clean.the northern i released also. if i go there again i think i'll take the four wheeler out first before trying to drive out there with the pickup again.
