Small boat question?

I have a small 12ft aluminum boat that has been sitting in the backyard for ages and I'm thinking of putting a motor on it to get back into small streams and cricks. I already have a small elec.trolling motor but would like to put something along the lines of a small gas powered kicker motor on the back for a little more speed. I plan on mainly using it for hunting purposes. I'm curious if anyone has a setup like this and how fast a 2.5hp(or something comparable) motor would push a small boat like this?  The boat is a plain jane aluminum boat with aluminum bench seats. Thanks fellers.

I'd say look at a 9.9hp motor. If you have a couple guys in the boat it wont move very quick at all. I'm sure speed isn't that important. But with some guys and decoys, or heavier gear, etc. you probably will want to look at a 9.9 or so.  I wish I had a small boat laying around like you do!

+1 on the 9.9.  Current will take alot more power to navigate than a guy thinks.  Safety is a real concern with smaller boats and hazards such as rocks and dead falls in a river.

Any idea or guesses on how fast a 9.9hp motor would push a small boat?  Thanks for the replies.

My guess is with one man and full of gear probably around 5 mph or so.

I think that my 9.9 pushes the tyee about 7 or 8 mph. Not sure but I thought I checked it on the gps last year. I would think it would  make a 12 footer fly.

I just went outside and took a look to see what it is rated for and a 7.5 is max. I guess I'm gonna need something a little smaller than a 9.9.

Pard runs a 4HP on a 12' or 14' Johnboat (can't recall length exactly) but it'll run 5-8MPH upstream and 7-12 downstream depending on current.  This is on one of ND's smaller rivers.  The boat fits in the bed of his truck and the motor is light enough for one guy to carry it down to the bank and then attach it streamside (2-stroke).  There's a small internal tank and he just carries a 1gal can of mix gas back by the transom.  We've never run out and I can't really recall ever even having to re-fuel when we start out with a full tank of about 1/3-1/2 gallon.  We pull cranks upstream a just a tad over idle.

we have a 12 foot boat also.  we fish alot out of it everywhere. devils lake, rivers, little sloughs.   we have a 5 hp eska on it.  it is very old and doesnt have reverse.  the 5 pushes us across the lake nicely.  we also have a trolling motor on there that does well

I have a little 10.5 foot plastic type bass boat.  About 2 years ago I went on Ebay and got a brand new Suzuki 4 stroke 6HP with 3 year warranty for $1150.00.  It pushes my little boat at 5.8mph on the gps.

I learned how to water ski behind a 14' Lund with a 71/2 hp Merc. It went fast enough.

Yes, a 9.9 will push that boat a lot faster than 5 - 8 MPH, more like 18 - 22 MPH full of gear and hunters.  I don't know if they still do but Briggs and Stratton had a 2-stroke 8 HP boat motor a few years ago.  That would be your best bet IMO.

Sorry guys.  I'm having a VERY tough time buying some of the claims here.

Water skiing with a 7.5hp motor?  I can barely get up on two skis with a 50 horse motor on a lightly loaded 16 foot aluminum boat.  How much did you and the driver/spotter weigh?  30 lbs each?

20mph with a 6 horse?  Unless it was an empty canoe with one light weight person I really can't see how that is possible.

I have a 15 horsepower johnson on a small 14 aluminum boat.  It will plane out with one 200lb person and some gear.  I've never GPS'ed it but I would guess it'll do about 15mph-18mph or so with one person.  With two 200lb people it with just barely plane out when it is wide open.  Three 200lb people and it will not plane out.

I will see if my mom still has pictures. I was in the 6 grade and weighed maybe 90 pounds, my brother was running the boat and he weighed maybe 110.  I believe they measured the hp of the motor differently than they do now. ( at the prop instead of the powerhead) I could be wrong, but it was plenty to get me up and ski on Canyon Ferry Res. in Montana.
