I say no    if you work an 8 hr day or 12 hr day and they smoke 10 cigs at 8 minutes per cig  at either job they loose 1 hr of productivity yet expect the 8 or 12 hrper day  pay and don't do as much work.  Insurance rates are higher for smokers.

I don't smoke, have never tried smoking, and never will.  However, some of the hardest workers I know are smokers.  Do I think they should quit, yes.  Is it any of my business, no.  Again - However, as long as they smoke only on their standard breaks/lunch and cover whatever percentage necessary on insurance for the increased costs and needs...   Yes, hire them.

First of all, the amount of breaks they get to smoke are controlled by you the employer.  Where I work smoker's only get to smoke during their 10 and 2 breaks and at lunch.  So, no loss of productivity.  If there's a productivity loss due to multiple breaks that's a supervisory issue not a smoker/non-smoker issue.

Secondly, are you also going to exclude obese or over weight people?  The health issues from being overweight are now the #1 health issue in our country and these people cost you as a business just as much as a smoker would.

Most of the smokers that I work with have also been some of my most productive people.

Good luck in finding a work force of perfect people who make perfect choices and have perfect genes.

I am a smoker and this made me laugh! I guess I would hire them for their ablitiy to do a job not if they are a smoker or not. What's the difference if they sit by the coffee pot, play on internet eating donuts or if they are having a cig?

Not sure why anybody would want to do that to their body but have at it I guess.

Would I hire one?  Depends on the job and the person, not on their black charred lungs and stinky "perfume".

However, I absolutely dispise smoke, makes me ill thinking about it.

I would and have hired smokers and at one point in my life was one. Cant see why you wouldnt hire a smoker, as much as I now hate the smell it almost gives me a headache just thinking about it.

Nice thing about hiring a smoker, chances are better you will never have to fire them because they are much more likely to die young or just drop over from a heart attack.

Smokers are the most unproductive workers there are. They are either taking a smoke break or can't concentrate because they are worried about when their next smoke break is.

With smokers, if you watch, their entire lifestyle is based on when they can smoke. Schedules are completely arranged around "getting that next smoke in".

The only jobs I'd hire a smoker for, are outside jobs where they smoke whenever they want.

Flame on!

doesn't matter with ND being a right to work state hire who you want...fire who you want...

...can this person perform his/her duties at or above expectations – that would be the answer to your question

What about people that have kids?  I know where I work the kids call their parents (several times a day) and take up time that could be spent working.  They have to leave to get them from school.  Also people with younger kids miss work with sick kids at home.  All of these things take up more time than me smoking.

I am just wondering if you think about this when hiring marksman?

I've hired smokers in the past.  They were all good workers, as all the people I hired were.  BUT, like Marksman said, the number of breaks and productivity lost by the smokers was very noticable compared to the non smokers.   Studies done a lot of places confirmed this, too.  Absenteeism is much higher, too.   One of my otherwise best employee was a smoker and besides tolerating the multiple smoke breaks outside, she was always sick with migreines, flus, backaches, and all that.   Though she was a nice lady and a good worker I was relieved when she quit, and I resolved never to hire another smoker, unless there was no other alternative.
Smarten them up, you say?   As an employer, I have to say  its difficult to get tough and cut on breaks here and there and absenteeism is even  harder  to police!.    Much easier just to avoid the problem from the start.

Also, as a previous employer who had medical coverage for all my employers, insurance premiums ARE higher, even with group plans.

In hiring you can't discriminate against race, sex, pregnancy, and a whole list of thingsetc.  but I've heard this topic discussed many times among other employers overr coffee, and most do avoid hiring smokers as much as possible and apparently its legal.  Technically legal or not, trust me they quietly do it.   The smoker applicant may not be aware of it, but to be turned down for a job applicant because of smoking is commonplace.

There are so many angles to take on this one.  I was raised in a non-smoking home, but had many relatives and close family friends that smoked and honestly I hated being around it. Yet, as a 21 year old I picked up the habit. Smoked for over 15 years, quit for nearly three and then started again about 10 years ago.  I have been in a supervisory, or managerial role almost my entire 30 year work history. Smoking has never been a considered factor when making a hiring decision for me. That could partly have to do with me being one, but, the end decision has always been made on a calculated decision on who(m) I thought  would be the best fit for the position.  You will find examples on both ends of the spectrum as to whether, or not, smoking has a noticable effect on a person's job performance. I have always been very careful NOT to let my habit effect mine. As far as health issues, I may be abnormal but I've missed a total of about 6 or 7 days due to illness in 30 years. Personally I've witnessed an awful lot more sick days by employees from the "bottle flu" than anything else.
My two cents is; evaluate the individual on capabilities, not habits.  Is the person capable of meeting, or exceeding the expectations of the position?  Since smoking in public is becoming more and more restricted, how can you regulate (or eliminate) the opportunity for the employee to smoke?  If the person really wants the job and knows on the front end that smoking will not be allowed in/at the workplace, the property, company owned vehicles, etc. they will have to either learn to deal with the addiction differently, or seek employment elsewhere. With the extremely low unemployment we are experiencing in North Dakota, don't automatically eliminate a potential hire because the person smokes.  You don't know when the next person that you might consider for hire might walk through the door.

Well, since I've wasted a good half hour of "work" time now. I think I'll go to lunch and maybe have a smoke and try to make my afternoon more productive when I return.

i work with a bunch of them. i watch them walk out 10 times a day and not think anything of it. some of them punch the clock and then walk out side to smoke! the worst part is that those same people are the first to complain if somebody has to leave early for a sport or a family function. not to mention the never exhale before entering the building as they snub out there cigarette

Yes, if they want the parking lot and entrance to their place of business to be littered with ciggy butts.  If you're a smoker, the world is your ashtray.
