Went out this morning with a buddy and my dog. Got 5 sharpies and 3 huns in about an hour and a half. What a ton of birds out there! Lots of huns this year, and big coveys too. Reminds me of the early to mid 90's.

Went out around noon today, waited for the roads to dry out a little bit.Walked two spots, both were cattle pastures.Dog had no proble smelling the birds. We had gotten about 1 1/2 inches of rain and she was picking them up from several yards away.Only kicked up one covey at each spot, six birds in each one.Missed the first three shots of the year and the birds flew into the corn.Second spot got 2,dog found one that was wounded and even picked the other one up and carried it to me.She is no retriever!Any she was getting pretty tired after those two walks so we headed for the house.

It was still plenty wet this morning, my dog had a little trouble with the wet grass and the smell, just meant she had to work a bit slower. She still found them all with a little help from us marking birds though. It's all about team work. Can't wait till I can get out of here this afternoon and finish that limit I was working on this morning. One more sharpie and 2 more huns to go. Making my mouth water just thinking about them in the oven.

Good for you guys. It is one hunting opener I wouldn't miss. A picture perfect day to be afield in North Dakota. We saw no huns but 3 flocks of very young pheasants and 3 groups of grouse. This recipe is pretty good. Chunk the grouse breasts into pieces about the size of the first joint of your thumb. Cut a dill pickle in round slices 1/4 " thick and chop a purple onion into nickel sized pieces.  1 slice of bacon cut into small squares. Slip all pieces on a kabob skewer and grill on medium heat for about 7 minutes. Just before you take it off the grill add a little barbeque sauce over the top.

Dick, good to see you back on here! I don't want to sidetrack this thread so I thought I'd just let you know there is another thread about the HF issue on here if you or any of the other sponsors of the measure would like to care to answer some questions regarding your positions. If you folks have the time to go out and tell your story to the nonhunting public, it would be nice if you would use this forum to explain it to the sportsmen of ND and if possible answer a few questions some of us have.

sd, haven't seen Dick on here since the anouncement so haven't had an opportunity to invite him as a sponsor into the discussion on another thread. No highjacking, poisoning or anything else, just an invitation to address the sportsmen of ND that log into this site. If they are going to open this can of worms, it's the least they could do.  If they would have done so in the titled thread when asked, there wouldn't be the need to ask again now.

Went out last night with the dog and a couple of buddies that wanted to find some sharpies. Found lots of birds, had their limit in about 45 minutes. Concentrating on chokecherries near sunflower fields. Birds have lots of chokecherries in their crops.

One of my many favorite recipes for grouse - slice a grouse breast across the grain about 1/4" thick, marinade in italian dressing for 4-6 hours, dip in beaten eggs, coat in shorelunch, and deep fry till golden brown. DELICIOUS.  Beer can grouse is amazing as well.

Good recipes there.  I'll try em assuming I can still hit a grouse or two.
GST, I can't speak for Dick but he probably wants to avoid a silly peeing contest that leads nowhere and changes no minds on what you call "hunting!"     Like several other people I know who might have constructive intelligent information to share and explain but won't on this website for exactly the same reasons.    Just ends up with personal attacks (starts out, actually)  so why bother??
I saw a couple of coveys on available land yesterday but had forgotten a shotgun.  Today the gun's in the pickup and the dog is all charged up!

going out again today after work. Numbers are great around here, I guess the game and fish didn't count this area this spring. Average or better sized broods (8-13), and lots of them. Coveys of huns between 9 and 18 birds.
