I would take a look at getting a .45 caliber for use when bow hunting and home defense.  The .45 wouldn't probably work on bears, but would probably do the job on a Mt. Lion. Take a look at using the Hornady Defense round that is a hollow point with a plastic insert. This will help the round go through fur or a heavy jacket. For home defense, the 9mm round is very fast and has a tendency to go through walls.  As for a specific gun, go to the gun store and pickup several different handguns.  Pick the one that feels comfortable for you in that price range. I would recommend taking a pistol class and/or getting your Permit to carry. Then practice.

If you want to use the handgun for legal hunting in ND, the barrel needs to be a minimum of 4 inches long. If it is just for self defense while hunting, I believe it doesn't have to be that long.
Good luck.

Next on my wish list is a XDm 9mm compact with the 3.8" barrel. Cant use this to hunt large game, but fine for shooting gophers.

Smith and wesson 686 I think it was in a .357. Had one for a few years and loved it, ended up trading it in on a new rifle because I didnt use it enough. Great plinker and can shoot .38's to save some money if you wanted to.

4" 7 or 8 shot version would be tough to cuss.

I think mine was a 6'' barrel, and held 6. Little big to conceal, but was a good shooting handgun.

$500-$750 wil buy you most every quality handgun. If you're looking for carry and not to hunt with, I would go semi auto. Glock, XD, M and P, and for 750 you can get a nice 1911. If you are looking at big game hunting, then the semi auto is probably out. You will get much better accuracy with a single or double action pistol. .357 would be a good choice. Can keep cost down during practice sessions by shooting .38's. Plenty of energy to kill deer with a good bullet in .357.

You'll like it.  I got one a couple months ago.  Match trigger and barrell, very accurate and fun to shoot.  Nice to hold 19 rounds in the extended mag and 17 in the conceal carry mag.

If you want a 9mm. or 40 Sig Sauer P226 and don't look back.  Saw some pretty good deals on them also in Bismarck.  Had a XDM and got the Sig.  My favorite is the 1911 5" Springfield A1 loaded 45acp.  They had one at Scheels for $750 never fired usually $900(stainless).  Couple scratches in it from someone having a tough time reassembling.  They would buff out easy enough though.

9 MM are fun, shells aren’t too bad and if you get a box of hollow point they’ll do the job for home defense or charging critters.

Sig Sauer P226 in a 40 cal. and don't look back. Works in both single and double action, super reliable, easy to clean and disassemble, very accurate, decocking lever, 125 round standard capacity mag and avalable 15 round high capacity mag, and about as functional as you can buy. The only down side is this is a working gun; nobody is gonna look at it and ouuuu and ahhh at its prettyness.

Glock, Springfield XD, Sig, Beretta....ect.  You can get all of these in that range and they are all excellent weapons.  Main thing is to learn how to properly shoot them and you'll be much more happy.  There is nothing wrong with taking classes to learn the fundamentals, I can't even begin to tell you how many people I see shooting handguns that really haven't a clue.  Just say'en....

PS:  I love all three of my XDs.

What exactly is the difference between an XD and the XDM?

I bought a Kimber 1911 in 9mm a few months ago.  Fun gun to shoot, little big for carrying purposes though.

About $150.00 Allen.

Seriously I believe the only difference is the M has a match grade trigger and barrell.  Is that about right Jiffy?  You probably do more research than I, mostly I just listen and try to absorb what the salesman is telling me, then I judge by feel and trigger pull.
