SB 2224 (2011) - $100 bounty for each coyote up to first 2,000 coyotes.

SB 2224 - (Senators Klein, Bowman, Heckaman; Representatives Brandenburg, DeKrey) - Establishes a bounty of $100 for each coyote until 2,000 coyotes are taken. Funding comes from the wildlife services line item in the Game and Fish appropriation bill. Referred to Senate Natural Resources Committee.

I do not see any way this bill passes, it would be an enforcement nightmare IMO.

Doesn't make much sense; there would probably be 2000 shot in a week or two and then what?

$ 25 for each until  8000   would get them a bigger bang for their buck.

I wonder what they would do with 8000 yotes? Throw them on the ice at a Williston Coyotes Hockey game?

Not sure I like the idea.   If they are such a problem then landowners can kill them themselves or pay hunters to kill them.

We actually elected these boneheads into office? I thought this was a joke the first time I read it. Unreal.

In all seriousness, how much damage do coyotes do to domestic livestock?

Probably not much since most on here think that coyotes can't take down adult deer because "they've never seen it".

1. The bounty program is not an enforcement nightmare. You simplly take in either the ears or the front 2 paws and get paid.
2. Coyotes are a problem with domestic livestock. Newborn calves and sheep as well as fawns.
3. Other states and provinces have successful coyote bounty programs.
4. Everyone whines the reason there are so many coyotes is fur prices are so low.
5. Wildlife Services has programs for coyote problems including ariel hunting, this would be one more tool. Ariel hunting burns thru dollars faster than what people may think. Simply in a numbers of coyotes/dollar spent these programs get more results.

What needs to change in this bill is what Geo. alludes to a lower bounty of 10 or 20$.
You do not turn in the whole coyote, only as mentioned the ears or paws, likely the paws. The coyote itself can be sold to the fur buyer. $30 dollars/ coyote would get a few more people interested and population controled. Also this has to be a seperately funded program besides what has been allocated for the Wildlife Services. It should also probably be be split into 4 districts.

the aerial hunting is not as spendy as one mat think... i think last  i heard is a state hunter gets something like 120$  per trip. if a person calls and complains the pilot calls in  and tells the state there plan and in about 1 hr they get approval, that one plane at $120 flys around and may kill anywhere from 5 to 25 coyotes or more.

that seems like a heck of allot more bang for our buck than a 100 dollar bounty for 2,000 dogs.

This is feel good legislation introduced by people who simply do not grasp or understand what it takes to control or reduce a coyote population. This bill will do nothing and I mean nothing in controlling the population.

GST is correct in his comments on 1-2-5! His claim that other states have successful programs is subject to what you deem successful. If it is in getting people to hunt them for the bounty then Yes, if it is to claim a reduction in population, then GST tell us which state has taken out 70% of the population for 4-5 years in a row which is what is needed to effectively reduce a population without mange.

Bad bill and a waste of money especially if that money is being forced out of the G&F account.

You will do more good by saying that after Jan 1 coyotes can be shot, hunted on land that is posted with the exception of the section of land around occupied buildings!

In my lifetime I have seen fence row to fence row farming and the return of CRP and game to the landscape. Now we face again the prosepect of fence row to fence row again! Sportsman are our own worst enemy in that we fail to look forward and focus to much on the now!

Like I have said a thousand times.  Let the sleds at them and there will be no more problem.
3X....... are you serious.  Coyotes cause Millions of dollars of damage a year.  Field and stream had a great article on the amount of damage.  I will see if I can find it.

You just cann't get over the trying to pass laws to dictated what the landowner can do with his land or who the landowner wants on his land.
