Going elk hunting in 2 weeks, having to go it alone for the most part this year, being in grizzly country and everything else that could go wrong in the mountains i am looking at renting a satelite phone for 10 days. Wondering if anyone has experience with using, renting, or finding a good one and what is the asking price, will start doing some research myself but am open for suggestions and or comments.

I think Kohler Communications in Sidney, Mt rent them. Don't know price. Another option would be getting one of those "Spot" rescue devices if you didn't really need to talk. I think they got a track option for your family to track you and if you need help or resue, it sends a rescue signal to authorities.

The spot deal would be better imho if they work as advertised.   The texting and email option would be handy.   Probably easier to send an sos signal than fiddle around with a satellite phone?

Agreed.  2 sheep hunters were presumed lost when their "SPOT" wasn't working.  They were checking in as they'd planned on, and were receiving whatever message the SPOT gives you that said their message had been delivered, it hadn't been, for a week.  Frantic wives and a concerned outfitter.  They ended up coming out a day late due to taking a sheep late in the hunt but all was well as far as they were concerned, until they got to the base camp where the outfitter operated out of.  They caught hell from their wives, a lotta hell.

Satellite phone is very easy to use.  Each time were powered it up, ours took about 30 seconds to register itself and find satellites, after that it was smooth sailing.  The wives all said no difference than a cell phone as far as reception @ home.  Our outfitter told us that the "Iridium" brand worked the best up in the arctic circle.  Lucky for me a pard has one, we just had to pay for minutes.  My 1 week Sat phone experience was flawless.

The SPOT does work well, I see a member of this site updates his facebook from time to time with the SPOT.  I think he was in China or something.  I have used the SAT phones on my deployments and they work very well.  Either option would work but in a true OMG moment the spot would be a little quicker to use

Met a fella the other day who was talking about elk hunting in the rough stuff of MT and because he has developed a severe allergic reaction to wasp bites, he went the route of some locater service.  I am guessing it is either Spot or one of its competitors, if there are any.

Those seem to be the better route to go if a person needs to be gps located by a rescue team.
