Hey Guys, I was just wondering if you could give me any tips on salomon fishing at the tail race/sakakawea.  I know that you can throw meps and use salmon eggs and crank baits but what colors should I use.  There is a rainbow tout looking meps and raps those any good.  Any tips would help even on the areas to fish for them.  I have a small boat so I would be restricted to shore or bays on less windy days.  Thanks A bunch. Depends if you have down riggers or not... If you don't then your best bet will be in the fall when they come shallow to spawn. During that time you can pull cranks  anywhere from the intake structure all the way up to the mouth of wolf creek. Or as you stated try casting cranks, mepps, or do the salmon egg or even a nightcrawler under a bobber.. All have produced for me in the past. As far as color goes that varies on a day to day basis just throw everything in the tacklebox at em until you find somthing that works. They can definitely be elusive creachers some days and the next you will have no problems whatsoever. Hope this helps and good luck!

I've never had any luck long-lineing for salmon nor have I been able to catch one in the tailrace but...I have caught a lot of them during the late summer/early fall anywhere from the Riverdale bluffs over to Scoria Bay along the face of the damn.  Downrigger are a must for this type of fishing though since they like the cold water down deep.  I've caught them from as shallow as 40 ft to as deep as 110 ft down.  If you would like more information about this type of fishing, I'd be happy to share what I've learned over the past 12 years of downrigger salmon fishing.
