Salmon Fishing

I am new to salmon fishing, and was wondering what I need to get started, as far as lures and the such.  I already have the down riggers and rods.  When is the best time to catch them?  Any help would be apperciated.  Also where do you buy the tackle.  Went to Scheels in Minot and Bismarck, and wanted to try Dakot Tackle yesterday, but they were closed.

Dakota tackle can help you out,  also Scotts Bait in Pick City has a good selection.   Scott is usually around in the morning and can help you out.    People fish mostly an 11 inch rotating flasher in front of a plastic squid.  A few use Herring.   The most popular colors are blue and white.  Pink and green are a couple of other colors that are used.

I usually have my riggers down about 65-75ft.   Next month when fish start staging for the spawn people start pulling cranks closer to shore and not as deep.   If you have a marine radio there is usually some chatter on there.   Most of the boats seem to put in at Goverment Bay and people are usually pretty helpful.    These fish are going to die whether they are caught or not.

Has anyone tried verticle jigging for them, ie hammered spoons or the "ice fishing" Rapala?  Is there any reason not to try this technique?

It a rough year to learn. Salmon tourney had 35 teams and many are dedicated salmon anglers. There was a seven pounder, a three pounder and a 00.28 pounder caught in eight hours of fishing. Fish numbers down (but kinda rebuilding) plus think fish are still west. With so much water coming in they probably ran like the dickens. Issue is not that many and plenty of grub for them so challenging regardless.

My point is learning the ropes isn't too challenging. You have gotten good tips and I would strongly suggest you get in touch with the great planers club. Just google them here in north Dakota. Now back on point fishing could frustrate you but just remember the shape sak is in so you don't get upset and quit because you think you aren't doing something right.

There will probably be a little bite shortly but it might end up being more of the crank bite mentioned earlier. Like I said contact the club and you will get loads of info.

I marked alot of big fish suspended chasing smelt south of shell this weekend.  I'd guess they were salmon.

just remember salmon don't need to be hungry to bite.  I find its best to make them angry.  Hot pinks, and fluorescent oranges, big loud n flashy.

Thanks for the help, and keep it coming.  Just wanted to try something new as far as fishing goes.  Did it a few years ago, and cought them on the crank bite and it was a blast.  Just seems no one wants to carry anything to catch them in Minot.

If it flies it dies!

Go online and order the tackle.  Luhr Jensen makes some great choices.

bright fluorescen pink, orange, and yellow spoons of different styles & sizes are some of my favorites for casting. Also tough to beat fresh collected eggs from a previously caught female under a bobber.

What is the salmon forcast looking like for this fall? Are the guys fishing deep this early having an average season?  I am fairly green to fishing Salmon in Sak but have had some sucess many years back with cranks late in September.  I picked up a couple new line counter rods and want to give leadcore trolling a try this fall.  Target date for the trip is mid September.  Historically speaking many fish are caught in less than 50ft of water by this time, does it pay to troll with cranks at say 40-50 ft down with leadcore over say 75ft at this time of year?  I would value any advice from anyone who has had success with techniques such as this any advice on lure colors, size and type.  I plan to run 18 pound leadcore, 20 pound mono leader with Reef Runners, #7-9 Shad Raps, and possibly trolling spoons.  Best I can figure is that a guy should be able to get down to about 50 ft with this setup.  Any advice greatly appreciated.

Most the fish ive caught after labor day in the past arent down to deep. They can be 5ft or 25 ft below the surface  as well as on the surface especially late sept, But ihave caught them deeper.

Salmon are predatory fish and will bite even when not hungry.  You want a bait that makes a lot of noise.  I've had a lot of luck with ProTroll E-Chip flashers.  I've also had a lot of luck with glow-in-the-dark flasher/squid combos.  I'm not a fan of herring because I've never had any luck with it.

I've never fished Salmon up there, but can't be much different than Salmon fishing in other places. Lake Michigan and Superior are the only experience I've got. I totally agree with the flasher/squid combo and glow squids and plugs are great. Key to the glow is getting out early. Hands down the best day of Kings so far was 15 in the box by 7 am. Nothing like a screaming reel at the crack of 4:30.

If your gonna get into salmon you need to target the salmon from the 2005 class. They stopped stocking for a few years until again in 2009. Up until 2006 they stocked about 250,000 salmon a year. Now i'm not trying to blow any smoke up your tailpipe but most of those salmon classes aren't worth a damn. They were just too malnourished and didn't have the proper genetics. In 2005 game and fish used special enzymes which were triggered into action by secretions from the embryo's hatching glands. This turned the 2005 salmon class into one that will blow your socks off. If you catch some of these fish they are absolutely phenomenal.  Odds are you'll catch very few of the other classes and when you do hook up with a 2005 you'll know, because it will dazzle your rod like a woman of the night. Now all of you that study stocking reports know exactly what i'm talking about just like the game and fish told me years ago, "stay alive don't take that dive, only fish for 2005 because they survive and they will always thrive".

1:26am and you managed to string this whole thing together with not perfect, but pretty good spelling and punctuation? I approve of this.
