I would execute the majority of sex offenders. 100% that involve children other than the 18 year old who marries the 16 year old, etc. I'm not a believer in 3 strikes either. The laws are written and the punishments defined. Break the law, deal with the punishment. Do it 2x. Join the sex offenders. I've always accepted every punishment imposed on me when clearly defined by those who blazed the trail before. Dumb mistake or not. Our job as parents is to raise a future successful member of society and the only way for the kids to get their is to make their own mistakes along the way and deal with the punishments. Not to have their parents, peers or whoever thinks rules are open for interpretation jump in.

re: Student supspended for bow at school

posted by: G Man. There are many points on each side of the issue. Zero tolerance is zero tolerance. Should a person make an exception in rural areas? I don't know. Where do you draw the line for our children's safety?

Columbine, CO had a population of 24,095 in the year 2000.

re: Student supspended for bow at school

posted by: kdm. Funny how zero tolerance is the buzz word for schools but not for real life. We have repeat offenders still on the streets, three strikes for criminals before they go to jail. Convicted sex offenders back in our society. This kid left a bow in his car and it's "your to dangerous to be in school" or "its a threat to my kids safety". I for one don't quite understand. There are real threats out there that need to be dealt with and this is not one of them. IMO.

re: Student supspended for bow at school

posted by: permo. man is that crazy! I rememeber back when I was going to college at the University of Mary, 1998-2002, I would keep my shotguns in my truck, and often times during the school day we would us the school to meet up for hunting trips. Walking across the parking lot to one another's vehicles carrying our shotguns our in the open like it was no big deal, we never even gave it a second thought. I wonder if a guy could get away with that now?!@ craziness.

re: Student supspended for bow at school

posted by: eyexer. Zero tolerance in rural america is absurd at the least. Let them have that in the inner city. Very few drive to school there anyway. If they want to keep up the zero tolerance crap, I say all students should park on the city streets. We'll see how long the zero tolerance lasts then.

re: Student supspended for bow at school

posted by: bobkat. I understand, Stalker, but a bow inadvertently left in a pickup IMHO needs a bit of tolerace. Maybe some token punishment, but suspension??? A bit ludicrous, assuming what we get in the press is accuarate and there's not more to the story!

re: Student supspended for bow at school

posted by: STALKER. zero tolerance. Check the definition. I grew up in rural ND and did all the same gun toting exercises as everyone. Cleaned guns, pheasants, deer in Vo Ag class as demonstation speeches. Times have changed. Zero tolerance needs to be zero tolerance. I also spank my kids vs. timeouts.

re: Student supspended for bow at school

posted by: bobkat. Even though we all have tales of how guns were looked at when we were kids, might and public perception makes right, and thanks to too many school shootings we'll never return to those days though I wish we could.
All we can hope for is enough support for a kid like this and maybe educate the administration people to evaluate every situation and cut slack where slack SHOULD be cut, etc.
How many e-mailed the administrator or school board on this? If we didn't, next time an innocent well meaning kid gets expelled for the wrong reasons all of us are at least partly to blame that we didn't support a kid like this. Once precedents are formed, other school units will nturally follow. Nipped in the bud by a flood of e-mails, "Rules" might be made that are less draconian and more understanding in a situation like this.
Do nothing and we lose our 'rights' to complain. Guns and Bow questions need all the vocal support we can get, especially in the next 4 years. If we don't care about these things enough to take 27 seconds to e-mail a complaint when stuff like this happens, then maybe we don't deserve them.

re: Student supspended for bow at school

posted by: HNTDUX. Crazy!! I brought my 870 in for speech class in 99. I did an informative speech on the disassembly, cleaning and assembly. I got an A+....now you get the boot! I did this in rural MN as well.

re: Student supspended for bow at school

posted by: pigsticker. that is some crazy stuff.

I actually refinished an old gun at my school for an industrial arts project. Of course it had to be in two pieces, stock and barrel. I graduated in '96. My my how the times changed.
