The State Health Department says a naturally-occurring phenomena may be to blame for the complete die-off of aquatic life at the Short Creek Reservoir near Columbus.

Mike Ell of the health hepartment said Wednesday further test results are pending, but pesticide runoff has been ruled out.

Ell said virtually all aquatic life died because of a complete depletion of dissolved oxygen content in the reservoir after a torrential rain hit the area earlier this month.

The reservoir is part of a larger watershed and Ell said he suspects the downpour flushed a large amount of lignins and tannins, naturally-occurring organic compounds that are found in plants and often associated with lignite coal into the water.

Ell said a survey of tributaries downstream of the dam also found that snails and other animals had died.

He said tests found the dissolved oxygen content of the reservoir to be 1-2 parts per million, well below the threshold to support life.

“It looks like it was fairly natural occurrence,” Ell said.

Water in the reservoir also turned a blackish color and Ell said interviews with area residents indicated that was not uncommon from some wetlands in the area.

Ell said other samples have been sent to an outside testing lab and results should be back within a few weeks.

Ok ya farmers get money so what................ i would rather give them my tax dollars to help keep the cost of food low than have my money go to real leach on society. The lady that is on her fourth kid by fourth dad because she does not want to work.

re: short creek dam northof Columbus toast

posted by: Allen.
fishing farmer Said:
i do understand the run off , but with that said do you know of a cost affective way to do the right amount of fertilizer to rase a good crop? just wondering i am up for new ideas to try say a 50 bu wheat crop and a 2000 lb canola crop

Hah! Wish I did, about the only good attempt so far is through fertigation which doesn't help our dry land farmers. If I could come up with something, trust me I would. Then I could make my fortune by building and marketing new equipment to the ag community. As is I will leave it to our mechanical and agricultural engineering friends to come up with the working solutions. I have faith in them as they are entrepreneurs who have given us a lot of advancements over the years.

re: short creek dam northof Columbus toast

posted by: bucksnbears. hey, did you all hear that shortcreek by columbus is toast???

re: short creek dam northof Columbus toast

posted by: Sportsman. I agree that many thing get lumped into the farm bill, but the June/July issue of Reader's Digest has an interesting article that also shows how much money is wated by the farm bill - payments going to farmers that have been dead for 10 years - payments going to people who don't farm and who never have farmed - payments going to overseas millionaires in Saudi Arabia who don't own land in the US. They also point to Senator Conrad as one of the worst when it comes to porking up the farm bills.

I am not advocating that the farm bills be eliminated, but it sounds to me like they sure could use a good over-haul and clean up TONS of pork.

re: short creek dam northof Columbus toast

posted by: guns4ever. Farmers/Ranchers should sink or swim without help from the govt. Get rid of death tax on land zoned as agricultural so each generation does not have to jump the same hurdles. Its time for some tough love....too many out there suckling the govt teet.
I agree 100%. Eliminate the farm program completely. I am a farmer\rancher and I see it as a big waste of money. You do realize though that that would mean cutting food stamps, school lunch programs, WIC, and a few other welfare programs that I can't think of off the top of my head. These are all programs that get lumped into the Farm bill and farmers get the blame for getting all that money.
I think that was EXACTLY what Allen was saying - cost effectiveness being the limiting factor on the new technology.

re: short creek dam northof Columbus toast

posted by: fishing farmer. i do understand the run off , but with that said do you know of a cost affective way to do the right amount of fertilizer to rase a good crop? just wondering i am up for new ideas to try say a 50 bu wheat crop and a 2000 lb canola crop
