Bummer LK, That type of thing is never welcome. Keep your chin up and make the cover thicker. That'll teach'em LOL!

re: New Playground

posted by: LKN4170.
Exactly kdm, you never will see these deer to shoot. It doesn't help that they are educated 6 months out of the year. What I mean is the res borders this land and is patrolled relentlessy by poachers day and night.

re: New Playground

posted by: kdm. LK, isn't that a good thing. Unseen deer tend to be unshot deer. However, they will come out sooner or later. It is the same on my place. The 10 acre tree block is so thick you can't see 5 ft when you are inside it. Deer love it.

Great pics Bdog. The food plots look like they are coming along great. Are you gunning for that buck in the photo or do you have another one in mind. I have a big ten that I am shooting for. He is not the biggest buck, rack wise on the place, but he is the boss buck and the most mature. It's him or nothing for me this season. I can fill the freezer with does. Last year we took 13 does and 4 bucks of the place. It appears we will have the same population this year as we have already seed 6 does with twins (all at the same time) and 4 bucks. One looks promising, but it's not the boss man. Keep the pics coming, I love'em.

re: New Playground

posted by: LKN4170. Grazing is a good thing if managed no doubt. My old hunting grounds was an old pasture full of poplars and red willows. It was sold 3 years back and hasn't been grazed since. It is as nasty as you can imagine now, the poplar groves have gotten bigger and the red willow are nasty big and are expanding. IN a few more years you won't be able to see the deer, to much cover.

re: New Playground

posted by: bdog. kdm,
Hey kdm,

I was driving around the property looking at how much of it has changed in the 5+ years we have owned it. Some of the changes we have done like the trees row down the 1000' driveway, food plots, triming and cleaning the exisiting tree rows. But the lower 40 acers turned into a forest happened on its own. Grass growing everywhere, less and less ticks, more and more deer, trees, birds of all kinds everywhere, geese nesting on the property this year.

I was thinking about one of the posts to your thread when I realized that just getting the cows off the property will help your land greatly. The land on its owned maybe with some help from you here and there will repair itself. It will turn into a wildlife haven if allowed too.

Here is a result of allowing wildlife to be the focus of the land.

Stay safe and i will take you up on a beer when you get back
Hey Dick, thanks for the cost share information. I wasn't aware of the ratio so that is a good bit of knowledge. Does the cost share include application or just the cost of chemical? I would assume it is just the chemical, but assumptions are the mother of all F ups (I appologize if this crosses the PC line for FBO). I sent my email to you Rd and appreciate your input. I have some bare areas that are starting to slip. I would like to fence the property as well as seed some of the bare areas, but we shall see what time and the checkbook will allow. I think the county agent will provide a good seeding mix for the property, which brings up the next issue...winter cover. What type of brush/trees to plant to provide shelter and food. I know buffalo berry and buckbrush are there already along with sweetclover, but would like something more substantial. Any suggestions?
The cost share on chemical is 60/40 by the weed board. Bring your ASCS map and call the county shed ahead to pick up your purchase.
