Very sorry to hear about your dad. You are doing a great thing to honor him. Coolest thing I've heard of in a long time. If I can make a suggestion as to what to do with your gift.

The Bismarck/Mandan pd and sheriffs dept. has a fishing day where they take a bunch under priviledged kids fishing. They probably could some help with that.

Another group is lure em for life. This group take handicapped and trouble youth fishing a couple of weeks a year. I think they do one week a year on Sakakawea with one group. The next group they take kids from Devils Lake area for a week.

Sporting chance is another very worth while organization. They are always taking people out that don't get to spend as much time in the field as the rest of us.

The Bis/Man reel and Rec club also has a take a kid fishing day for under privledged kids.

The great plainers trout and salmon club also takes a group of disabled kids every year up to the spill way ponds and gets them into some great fishing with help of the game and fish.

As you can see there a lot of groups to choose from and probably didn't even scratch the surface of it. No matter what you choose I don't think you can go wrong. I'm sure your dad is proud.

re: Hunting/Fishing Memorial

posted by: ringneckbuster. thanks for the help, ideas and sympathies guys. i'll let u know how it turns out.

re: Hunting/Fishing Memorial

posted by: fire angel. My sympathies to you and your family.

A great way to remember and honor your dad. I don't have any ideas to add other than what has been suggested. I think contacting the G&F would be a great place to start.
re: Hunting/Fishing Memorial

posted by: Tim Sandstrom. May I send my condolences while applauding you for doing something like this for your father. He is a proud man even during rest, no doubt.

Very good ideas. There are many communities that would love to get support for fishing piers. As suggested, contact the park boards for each county or city you may be interested in. The NDGF as well. Good luck and again, my heart felt sympathy to you and your family.

re: Hunting/Fishing Memorial

posted by: fish-finder. I lost my father a few years back to cancer as well. Fishing and hunting is not the same without him there. We did the bench over looking his favorite lake. I also take the time to help out with fund raising events for fellow sportsman or woman who are stricken with cancer. The sporting community was very good to me and my family during my dads battle with cancer and I enjoy returning the favors. I also like the idea of providing fishing combos for the youngsters. Most all of the kids that I know of that grew up hunting and fishing have a great respect for the outdoors and for other people as well. I know that I will never forget my first rod and reel combo the old Zebco 202 spooled with about 12lb mono. I will never forget the grinding noise it made when landing a fish and how handy the dial drag was when you had the big one on. I also remember dad fishing beside me with the old Budweizer shorts with tube socks up to his knees and good old hush puppies and for comfort and a pack of smokes rolled up in his t shirt. Thats good stuff. If you need help if you go the combo route you may contact me as I can buy closeout combos and help you stretch your buck for the kids.
Sorry for your loss, haven't been down that road yet so I can't imagine how you feel. If you want to pursue the bench idea, talk to the jurisdiction that owns a park, GMA, boatramp, campground, etc. They may have some input or requirements on the type of bench so that they are durable and vandal resistant, or for one that fits in with their other facilities. Typical commercial quality benches for in public places start at around $300 and go up from there, and then you could add a memorial plaque. Some organizations or park districts welcome this kind of thing....for example, the Maah Daay Hey Trail Association accepts sponsorship of a gate or a mile marker post. Other ideas are to plant some trees with a memorial plaque, or donate some additional funds to be applied as local matching funds for a larger project such as an improvement project at a boat ramp, gun range, equipment for a hunters ed trailer, etc.

re: Hunting/Fishing Memorial

posted by: kpurchin_up. pigsticker----I just had to say what a wonderful idea to give starter combos & maybe even to donate time to teach the little ones how to fish......
