I don't see how this would not evolve into a ballistics discussion. There are many lessons to be learned here.

re: Better Knock Before You Enter

posted by: fullrut. How did this turn into a ballistics discussion? What I find strange is that nobody has commented on StevePike's comment to check out the kid's MYSPACE profile.
re: Better Knock Before You Enter

posted by: XERO. Fullrut - that still sounds a little bit incredible. Why don't you give it another test and report back to us. I agree with svnmag, I always found the wad nearby. You can't put that much impact energy on a wad.
re: Better Knock Before You Enter

posted by: fullrut. Nope. I remember him digging out the wad from the last catalog. We did it in the basement so there's no chance of a slug. I actually been hit by wads dove hunting before at over ten yards. My best guess is your table salt dispersed rather fast. Dad did load his own trap shells, so it could have been a little hotter than the normal load.
re: Better Knock Before You Enter

posted by: svnmag. I think Dad did the old bait and switch with a slug and I see nothing wrong with that. Back in the day, I dumped the shot and replaced with table salt. Would not kill a bird at ten yards. Maybe it clumped and I missed; I don't know. The wad floated down very near by. At point blank, this load destroyed a Pepsi can. Never tested it on the patterning board.

re: Better Knock Before You Enter

posted by: svnmag. Didnt discovery channel do the test - put the finger in the shot gun and see what happens. If I recall it expanded the barrel slightly and it blew the hand arm to pieces. If I was to grab a barrel and that said barrel was placed against my skin on the side of my body - I may live for a while. The shotgun would suffer some damage. The energy of the charge+velocity would be less due to the blockage on the end of the barrel vs. a 4 foot shot When I say less - were talking very little in terrms with todays barrels.
